Depends what you want really. As you dont seem to do many miles I would say the petrol. Petrols are generally cheaper to buy, but they are more expensive to insure.

what about your weekend drives? neither car will be up to temperature in your commute really, but if you do big weekend stuff then the tdi is going to be the one to have.

Not only that but the tdi resale will be better

tdi really on the better resale value later on, however they are 1500 dearer in the first place so swings and roundabouts really.

Personally i woul dbuy second hand which ever way you go.

However have you looked at the new facelift 1.8T FR, £11995 list price and i hear rumours that the online dealers are gonna be getting them nearer to 11- 11.5. And thats a bloody bargain.

I must admit the mileage and temp is a slight concern i have as dont do to many miles at w/e either! May have to detour from my route to work to get engine up to temp?

Just wanted to get out of the gutless car i drive now and get something with a bit of grunt!! And like the look of the cupras

Hi Ant FR

Just been looking at the new FR couldnt agree more that the price is a bit of a bargain?
Be interested to see what a 6mth old one would go for (depreciation and all that?)

thats an interesting comment, my situation is similar to the guy who started the thread, although i do alot of "social" miles. about 10miles a day for work, but in total about 1000miles per month. I think the TDI would be a better bet for me personally. i have been looking at the mk4 cupras lately, very tempted. Just cant find a dealer local with one to test drive:help:
The attraction of the fuel savings in comparison to now (mazda rx8 on average about 19-20mpg) is something i cant over look...[B)]

its not too bad. for 1k miles, i use about 1/2l - 1l, depending on the type of journey.
1ltr is about £6 from mazda.
When you think 1000miles is costing me £6 in oil (max) and work out how much petrol i am spending to do those 1000miles, the ratio isnt that bad atall :)

i think you can't go wrong with the Cupra TDi, fast economic and sensible all in one package.

RX-8 is nice, but i think it will lose out once the Rx-6 hits the road next year, people will go after them as mor elike the old Rx-7 ( ie 2 door) so may be best to dump the Rx-8 this year latest.

As well as the financial considerations, the way they both drive is completely different.

Maybe try driving both and see what you think.

depends on where you want the power if it 0-60 get the petrol or if you want mid range torque get a tdi) both are as fast as each other really, but if fuel consumption is a prob the tdi will be good a mponth fuel bill be be 5.5 gallons+22 quid or 37 for petrol, other thingsd are tdi noise if that bothers you but the cupra dieslel has a nice noise when moving!

i agree with that comment, there arent many tdi cupras at dealers near me, im going to have to travel to test drive one.
after driving a torquey 20vt, getting used to my rx8 was strange, so getting a tdi will be different again. ive driven a fair few tdis and they do drive totally differently, something that will take time to get used to but it'll be alright.

i think with that few miles the petrol would be the better bet, the diesel wouldnt get anywhere near up to temp, and you would just end up clogging it up with soot.
I totally agree with that. The TDI needs a good spanking at least every couple of days, and preferably every journey, otherwise you can feel the turbo getting less responsive after it's been stuck in a few traffic jams. And if you're only doing a 7-mile journey, it ain't going to be hot enough to be able to give it that spanking without hurting it. Also, in winter you're going to freeze your nuts off waiting for some warm air to come out of the vents.

I love my TDI, but it's not a car that's well suited to short journeys.
