Hi Guys,

I'm looking at a 1.4 Ibiza Chill 2002 (Silver) tomorrow with/for a friend, and wondered if anyone could point out anything to look for/check?

Cheers

Ohh same as mine...

Check the radio volume knob, mine is very over sensitive and goes down when you turn it up sometimes.

Rust on the boot below the back window.

Make sure the electric windows and front foglights work

Check the ext temp readout on the radio is accurate, It's about £20 for a new one, but if its buggered it can screw up the climate control and you get cold air when you want warm and and vice versa.

Interior door handles will probably have rubbery stuff peeling off on them, thats normal

This link will prove very helpful

Not sure if it's a common fault, but I've had both fog lights condensate... wasn't me

Sit with the engine on and push clutch in and out listen for a tin noise if so bearings are buggered! do not do wheels spin in the 1.4 as they have very weak gear boxes and it ruins them!

Also another tip is walk to the nearest dealer and buy anything but the 1.4 mk3!!

check for :

rust under rear windows and rear widnscreen,

make sure the car is cold when you first start it and make sure you have the bonnet open, listen for any unusual rattles ( it will sound like a tracktor for a few minutes due to its hydraulic tappets.)

make sure none of the gears crunch

clutch will be heavy but that is the norm on the 1.4's

make sure temp guage is accurate.

check suspension

loads of other things really

its a good car t own thogh and i love my 1.4, shame i need a bigger car now though :(

Check the previous MOTs!!! If anything to do with Emissions failing, stay clear! It's an expensive job to fix!!!!!

But, the radio knob thing is always sensitive in every ibiza and the same with heavy clutch.

Things to look for is rust like what everyone's said above, and if it's a five door check rear windows stay up and don't fall down when slam the rear doors!!!
But also the rear bumper, check it's securely on, as mine wasn't and when I went through a puddle fast it blew it right off! Also check that the thermometer is reading a realistic number and not -40 or just ---c or else it cocks up ur heating/cooling control. Oh, and check drivers seat is sturdy, as when first got mine it was missing a bolt or something which made it wobble!

Oh and if you've not heard our 1.4 ibiza engine's before, don't be put off that it sounds like a diesel, lol, that's just what they do!
