I took my filter out today and found....

The kind of folliage and shrubbery only to have been seen put into a fire at a recent open fireplace me and a few others (mis)used...... but thats another story.

This was after i'd pulled out what I could by hand. There was cr@p like that lodged in between alot of the fins in the filter.

That's the colour of the filter as it stands after i knocked all of the cr@p out of it. Is this the usualy colour of an oil burner filter or am i looking at needing a new filter, was planning to get a green cotton panel filter in the spring anyway. Not due its major service for another 7k.

Also ive noticed people on the forums talking about smoothing their air boxes or buying a smoothed air box and many various cars can have parts of the filter housing removed but wasnt sure what people had done. I noticed this part inside the housing where the air is delived from the filter. Didnt dismantle it but wasnt sure if this was part of the housing, a seperate part or the air hose leading out of the air box? And has anyone modified or removed this?

Its normal to have stuff like that in the bottom of the airbox, it shows the filter is doing its job. The filter should not be that colour either, it should be a creamy colour so I'd recommend replacing your filter mate.

The debris in the bottom is normal but the state of the filter says its either been in there a long time or something's awry. Go with the former if you don't know the last change but keep an eye on it in the meantime.

With filters they are so cheap yet can cost you loads in lost mpg, that if you arent sure, just replace.

However with that one lol, its filthy, best replace, well done for checking it though a lot of people dont always bother. You should be able to see light through a filter.

I had a filter like that on a mini, i thought i had a fuel leak, i was using nearly 3x as much fuel!

If a diesel it doesn't have a throttle body so you'll be there a long time trying to clean it.

i have just changed mine for a green panel filter and fitted it yesterday. my filter was a bit dirty but no where near as bad as that. but my airbox had an equally small shrubbery growing in it, i also had lots of grit and salt in there too from my motorway driving. when i opened it up it looked like an out of date unhealthy salad

Yep found a chewed up bit of plastic in there aswel

Nope Evans halfhsaw had done the last couple of services.... no suprises there then ey.


Has anyone got any info about that other part ive picured and what people have done with their diesel air boxes if anything, wouldnt want to do anything which could start to have a poor effect on the engine (heres me saying this with a filter as black as night) which is why I wouldnt go for a cone induction jobbie.

yep thats fine, the leon air box is the same in all the TDIs, so they state 150, but it would fit all types and generations.

lots of poeple i've spoken to suggested avoiding the direct route to get them because it can take a seriously long time for them to arrive. suggest find another vendor
