hi all, new here so be gentle please,

The name is adrian I am 33 from Salisbury in rainy wiltshire

just bought a V5 toledo on a V reg.

looks like I have the usual indoor swimmingpool issues:rolleyes: but i also have a few questions as well
  1. the cd changer doesnt read my cd's loads them all up but wont play owt!!
  2. seem to have a bit of a coolant loss, seems to be some crud round the water pump
  3. on start up sometimes it sounds like a hair dryer onder the bonnet (around the power steering fluid resevoir) any ideas?
  4. how do I set he clock

Hello and welcome.

1. Are the cd's you are using copies or originals? as sometimes the original cd changers will not read all types of cdrs.
4. To set the clock you turn the mileage trip reset button clockwise and anticlockwise and hold until the numbers are where you want them. anti for hours and clock wise for minutes.

The hairdryer noise may well be a sticky starter motor. I have similar noise from under the bonnet of my toledo. Only sound for about a second right? And doesn't do it sometimes if it's warm. Not an issue according to the Seat garage. But starter motor may need replacing at some point when it ceases all together. but even then they just told me o smack it with a hammer haha. oldest trick in the book! hope this helps and welcome.

Hi and welcome (you have same year/model as me - maybe try a remap?:D )

Re your questions I don't have many answers I'm afraid, but you've got the correct answer to number 4):

re 2) I have never had any coolant loss so this requires investigation (assuming you are always checking levels at cold and the loss means you are having to top up?)

and re 3) I don't know if it could be described as a hairdryer sound but it is normal for the V5 to be a bit noisy for a minute on start up (sounds a bit dieselish to me with background noise a bit like a quiet jet engine - I like to think it's preparing for action!). It had me checking the exhaust for leaks and everything until it became clear it was quite normal. The user manual also says it is normal as it takes a moment or two for the oil pressure to build up in the hydraulic tappets. It should settle quickly and become relatively quiet except for a little V5 burble. Anything beyond this is not right.

I take it you have looked for the owners manual in the tiny cubby hole immediately under the steering wheel (not the one to the right of it. It's just that it's hard to spot and it's surprising how many people don't realise it is there!

no book in cubby hole, had a good look:(

the whiring isn't the starter, had the bonnet up and it was definatly under the power steering resevoir somewhere:shrug: and starts with the ignition on not the start position. only done it a ferw times but it is rather loud and annoying. it does looks lika there is a fan housing with some flexable pipes on it in the general area ( but could be anything really havn't had a propper look). the engine sounds fine on startup tappits settle really quickly too.

spent the day yesterday doing the mastic treatment to the doors......bloody awkward messy job it was too, especially diving out between showers. just got to drive around for the rest of the year with the heater on full chat:cry:

site is great BTW loads of good advice and tips on it. hopefully i will enjoy the car a bit more when all the above points are resolved........was tempted already to trade it in for an S8:whistle:

I hope you get it sorted Adrian. Most solutions can be found on here - it is a great site for all sorts of things.

I've had a couple of niggles recently (MAF then fan fuse burn out), but when things are sorted I love the refined drive, the top spec and the whole understated look of the car. Feel like the engine could take super high miles, it's just some of the smaller component failures that are a bit annoying. Hopefully once all is cleared up you'll be able to appreciate the car for what it is.

thanks I appreciate the sentiment, I do really driving the motor and it feels like a much more expensive car than it is, hopefully the water will dry out soon as my feet have been melting on the drive from Salisbury to the office in York:D hopefuly things will be sorted out quickly and nothing else rears it's head.......

wet floors could be a combination of the door seals and blocked drainage holes.


i returned for 10 days over crimbo to find the rear nearside door sounding like a sloshing washing machine when you open and close it.
My other half found a guide on here somewhere and is going to rectify it before the onset of rust!!! :censored:

thanks Sam spent sunday cleaning and trimming seal around drain holes then masticing the door accesary carriers to death, hopefully this will sort the wet feet issues.

Like yourself, I noticed that my V5 was making an unusual whirring sound from under the bonnet when starting-up. The car was still under warranty, so as you do, I took it back to the Seat dealership.

The maintenance manager said (without any hesitation!!) that the V5 has an auxillary pump to circulate the water around the air-con & coolant system, in order to get it up to temperature more "quickly and efficiently!"

Sounds plausible, but I must admit I can be a little bit gullable!! But as yet I have no reason to doubt him..

that would make sense as it hasn't done it when started warm,


don't appear to have any wet feet issues now either:) must have worked, hopefully trimming the inside seal will prevent the crud build-up in the drain holes.
