How to treat rust

I had exactly the same patch on my old Ibiza. The solution is quite drastic but its worked spot on for me. First get a flat headed screw driver and scrape of all the rust infected paint. All the rusty bits are gona come right off. Scrape off ALL the the rust. You will now end up with a nice big patch of rust going round most of the wing. Get a wire brush and start scrubbing off the rust off. You might have to use some sandpaper for some areas. Once you cant see any rust at all, give the wing a wipe with some petrol or white spirit. Now get the old filler out and filler the patch. Sometimes it helps to dent in the patch a bit first so that more filler can be used, as a really thin amount might flake off. Next its time for some fun sanding. Keep sanding down the filler until it is COMPLETLY flat with the paintwork. Use Wet&Dry for the lat bit of sanding. Once completely flat and smooth, wipe the wing down with some water and dry it. Using masking tape and newspaper, mask up the area the car so that any over spray wont end up on your bonnet/alloys. Than on go 3 thin layers of primer and 5 layers of tornado red spray paint. Leave all to dry for a day and get some proper T-cut or colour restorer and rub that on the painted patch. And finally get some of the Red coloured Car-plan (I think) T-cut wax/polish thing and wipe that on. Now stand back and admire your results (hopefully).

Alternatively get your self a new front wing from the scrappy :D

Or you could do what I did with my track ibiza, and scrape the rust away and then paint it with Smoothrite (the non-textured version of Hammerite). OK, the white isn't the same white as the rest of the car, but it sort of worked

Doing the above to my car would scar me for life! - I'd personally then have to sell the car - but I suppose needs must.

Obviously your on a budget but I wonder how much a professional job would cost? The only treatment for rust is remove it completely i.e. cut it out.

Well it has worked a treat on my car when I did it. I did it because I was about to sell the car so I couldn't sell it with a big rust patch, or a horrible spray patch. So it was like a make or break project for me because if it were to go tits up, than I probably wouldn't sell the car.

AS for using a lacquer, its a bit of a grey area with me. When I used it to spray the spoiler, the lacquer reacted with the top paint and gave the spoiler a horrible spider web like finish. When I did the wing I didn't use lacquer and it looked absolutely spot on. I asked at the local motor supplies if I should get a can of lacquer, but they said its only needed for metallic finishes.

Here is a photo of what the wing had looked like after getting rid of the rust and spraying it. Sorry the photo isnt JUST of the wing, this is because its the only photo I have of the car after I have done it and just before I have sold it

Not too bad a job considering the rust patch alone ended up being about 25cm x 5cm

If you can get a wing cheap enough you owuld be looking at around £80 to spray it so if your worried and its your pride and joy get it done propper!
