How to remove overhead screen

My Altea got an overhead TV screen, however video input is in very inconvenient location (on console between rear passengers).

I am wondering if I can remove overhead console and somehow get access to video input at the back of TV screen (if there are any?) thus bypassing the video inputs on rear console?
This way I could fit the player in compartment right next to the screen.

Replace the panel that the plugs sit in with an ordinary blank one, the section that the plugs sit in will unclip from the original panel if I remember right? Then hide them in the console and run extension cable from them to where you prefer.

Hi Rookie

I've just bought an XL i-tech (we had an XL SE copa before) and have found a similar thing to you in terms of the TFT screen!

I have bought a media player which connects to the RCA cables and the 12v socket but where to put it is a bugger isn't it! Have you managed the handywork in this thread or are you still using the sticky tape approach (or have you tried something else even?) I wondered about some sort of velcro alternative but I've not tried yet...

Thanks

Andy

Nope, I didn't really do anything. :(

I had an old Raspberry Pi series B board, so installed Kodi on it and bought some short video and audio cables, then attached it directly to the connectors. Tried to use several types of double-sided velcros: no luck.
Hopefully I could get an access to 3d printer and print some holder for it.

Ah well, no worries. I'll have a think and let you know if anything works. I don't have a 3D printer unfortunately although that would be cool. Are you still liking the car though?

The car is nice although I am not very keen on DSG, especially around town when it is switching to 5th gear at 30mph. Apart from that it is a good car and tremendous value for money.

We have just bought bought an I-tech XL which is a massive upgrade from our 2006 altea stylance.

I was disappointed to read the manual of the head unit that you cannot play video from an SD card or USB.
I was really hoping to load up an SD card with kids movies and select them on the head unit to play on the rear seat entertainment screen and use the arm rest USB to charge a phone.

I think I was Expecting far too much, seems you can use the car stereo to boost audio from the RSE only.

I would appreciate some opinions on ways of using the screen please. My 2 kids are 1 and half and 3 and half years old, so selecting their own content using a remote control is behind them at this time.

I am thinking about an apple lightning VGA adapter and VGA-RCA lead for mimmicing an iPhone/iPad with the screen. Anyone have any other ideas?

Hi minimarvel, I'm sure others will have ideas too but this is what we are doing. My kids are 5 and 2 btw.

I bought one of these from Amazon for about £25... basically a media player that connects to the RCA (red, white and yellow) connections in the back with the cable included and you can attach SD cards or USB sticks to it with various file types. It also fits quite nicely on its side in the gap at the back of the front seat armrest with the USB stick or SD card pointing upwards.

In terms of playback, I've found that if you save all of your media files in one folder, you can start playing the first file (make sure the engine is running when you set it up or the player restarts when the engine starts) and it will go from one media file to the next automatically (helpful if the kids can't use the remote).

The car stereo can be set to aux2 (in the settings) and then the sound plays through all speakers. You can buy infrared headphones which connect direct to the screen but my kids are a bit young yet.

I know this is all sounding too good to be true right... well a couple of extra bits...

The player doesn't come with a car charger (it's designed for the house) so I bought one of these to power it with 5v:

And it might have just been me but I could hear a whining sound through the speakers so I bought a ground loop isolator from Maplin to eliminate it (just connects between the player and the RCA connection).

Overall, we find that it's great to make the most of the screen and it keeps my kids entertained on long journeys. If you use the fader to send all of the sound to the back speakers, you can even have a conversation in the front :)

Hope this helps

Andy

P.S. I've not done sufficient posts to include links to websites so you might need to copy and paste (sorry)

Thanks Anyhamer.

I was thinking of a sumvision cyclone, but as we have an ipad I am going to get an Lightning to HDMI adapter and a HDMI to composite cable along with a double usb carger for the cigarette lighter to power them. That will leave the media socket free for Ipad/ phone charging.

Will Defo use Aux 2 and fade the sound to the rear. I would like to hide all the cabling, but if it works then I may want to use it elsewhere , like at home to mirror the ipad to our home tv or a holiday tv a caravan etc.
