How long do brakes last ?

a 54 plate TDi just approaching it's 30K service.

A couple of times in the past week I've felt a judder in the brake pedal when heavy braking. Now I think it's just ABS at work, but made me think that apart from the usual oil & filter changes it's had nothing done to it since new. Will my brakes be on their last legs ??

How long, on average, until the discs/pads need changing ?

depends on your driving. theres no time frame.

can you not see the pads through the spokes?

As trumapat has said there is no real time frame for brakes. Some people have had to change them after 15-20k! Is the brake judder only under heavy braking?

A couple of times on heavy braking (although this morning it was on a metal join plate on a bridge, in heavy rain - so very probably ABS)
Once when I braked whilst turning a corner.

Just sh*t me up a bit this morning cos it was wet and I got worried.

I was thinking of taking it into Kwik Fit for a free brake check.. but am a bit dubious they will tell me I need new pads whatever they're like.

Can you see the condition of the pads through your wheels? If you are getting a judder under light braking then discs could be warped. Otherwise could be ABS kicking in
