How bad are the USB leads?

Ive got a small problem, iv found a place that do the leads etc and ive bought one with a serial connection but ive not got a new laptop which only has USB ports etc. Now I went to PC world and found a serial to USB converter but it was £30 more than a new lead! Ive now provisionally sold the lead to a friend and want to get a USB one, but all I read is there rubbish and some times don’t work? Now do people mean that theres no advantage of using the usb as its only a converter or that it just wont work correctly?

I bought a USB cable from eBay for use with VAGCOM, and it works fine.

Same situation as you. I previously bought a serial cable for use with an old laptop. New works laptop doesnt have serial, so bought a USB. No problems so far.

Never had any problems with my USB vag com cable from Ross -tech.

No problems here either with the proper job from Ross Tech. Bit pricey but looks well made so should last a while

or, if you want to keep your serial lead....

i use a usb/serial converter, got it cheap off ebay - there are loads on there.

it's the same as this one: Clicky

Think i got mine second hand for about £10

Thanks, i wont be buying the ross tech one as the price is too much. I know they developed it etc but im a tight arse!

Where are you gettin yours from? I just bought one 2nd hand for £20! And I can't get it to work!

Yeah i got mine from eBay, came from Hong Kong, ended up being around £25 once the shipping was added on.

I paid a lot for a genuine Ross-Tech one and have never had a problem at all!
