Hi All,

on a very short trip (couple of miles, and no big traffic jams), a warning beep started - so I guess I'm short on petrol or washer fluid....only to glance at the dash and the temperature gauge is sitting at 120deg (max) mark!

It never normally shifts from the upright position (ohh err), 90deg I think.

I whacked the heater on to max, and it dropped slightly. After arriving home, I gave it 10 mins and started the engine again, and it seems to be back to sitting at 90deg again.

Could this be a temperature sensor problem, or a sign of something much worse?!

cheers in advance,

As the other lads said - sounds very much like the famous water pump. Overheating when you are travelling but going back to normal when just idling?

 dammit... if it is the water pump, any idea how much it would cost to get it done at the dealers?

Thanks for the speedy responses so far guys.

A quick update: just took it for a short journey of 5 miles or so (local roads, no big speeds) and it was fine, with the needle in the usual straight up position.

Would this still point to a water pump problem, albeit an initermittent one?

cheers

Yes it's the water pump, when the turbo starts to work at 60+mph you'll see the temp shoot up.

If the impellar breaks up completely and you have complete water pump failure you may as well start over with a new engine, so as mentioned above do not drive it unless you have to.

Problem with water pump is that it's a cambelt off job, so you may as well replace the cambelt+tensioner etc.

Parts and labour £250+ at a guess(4hrs labour ish @ say £40 + parts and VAT:shrug:).

I understand GSf may do a replacement with a metal impellar instead of plastic....

Should we all be worried bout this problem?

I have LCR, 38K miles. No sign of any water pump or temp probs but sound like something that should be changed asap, probs or not.

When changing the cambelt I'd certainly recommend changing to the metal impellar version.

It's quite a common problem mine went about 45k miles

Seems that VAG haven't uprated the part, I guess not too many go when the car is under warranty otherwise they may be more interested

Yep mine did that it was just lacking water, although the dodgy sensor on the bottle is common too.

Dodgy pump doesn;t show till your on the move under load 50-60mph plus
