Hot air from blower when set to cold

I have an X reg 1.9S TDI. I noticed after being in traffic jam the other day for an hour or so that when I put the cold blower on it was blowing hot air. The engine temp gauge was only showing half way.

Was told by a friend that it could be the thermostat.

At the same time i found it hard to change in to 1st and 2nd gear. It would change into the gear but it was a strugle. Once in it was then hard to get back in to 3rd and 4th. No idea if this is a connected issue.

did it change temperature at all even slightly when you selected anything different on the dial i.e. hot to cold ?

It didn't seem to. The air was quite hot when set to cold. However when I got driving again it did cool down. Another point is that I couldn't hear the radiator fan come on. Dunno if I should (whether it makes a noise). Is there any way of testing that they do work???

Again thanx for the reply!
