High Mileage LCR should I or not

Hi New member been lurking for a few weeks and was thinking of getting a leon Cupra however I have now seen an 03 LCR wtih 82 k on the clokc which I can get for the amount I was going to spend on a cupra and Iam very tempted. Is there any reason not to get such a high mileage LCR. I have an Audi A3 1.8 T sport which has covered 114k with no problems but presume the engine is under a lot more strain when it is putting out 210 bhp than the 150 in my audi.
Any major things to be looking out for??

How much is it up for?

The 20vt engine is pretty reliable and does hold up to more power than the 210 in many chipped cars so I wouldn't be too worried about the mileage as long as the car seems to have been looked after well.

I've got a fairly high mileage LCR, 64k now, and I have to say it's surprised me how well it's coped engine/transmission wise. I've had plenty of sensors and colipacks go (but not MAF surprisingly), I've had the fans/fan controller thing go and a couple of split pipes.

I think it could do with some of the front suspension bushes being replaced, the front is stone-chipped, the wheels are looking a bit ropey (not curbed, but speckled) but the interior has stood up well. Originally I was worried about the hard suspension shaking the inside to pieces, but there are no more rattles than when it was new ;)

I would say, if you're into modding, go for it - as you're probably going to want to change dampers etc anyway. Change the main hoses for silicon ones and check the smaller hoses for splits/leak, then either get a copy of vag-com and do some logging or book it into a VAG specialist for a check up (they will pick up on stuff that an AA check won't, checking that it's running right and it's performing well).

If you stick around on here, you'll soon ne thinking about changing the turbo, so if that goes you'll have an excuse...

Hi,

I have a LCR which has done 78K miles and it's never missed a beat, although I make sure it's serviced every 10K without fail. IMO service history on a car like a LCR is a must. I don't think there is anything in particular to the LCR that you need to look out for. If the car has a fully documented service history then I don't think you need to worry too much.

If it doesn't work out with the car your looking at I have mine up for sale, see the link below for the details

If your interested drop me an email

cheers

If it has proof of a full service history and dont mind doing things like suspension and bushes at some point go for it. At that price it's a lot of car for the money...

Let the modding commence :D

I really wanted a black lcr but with the funds available I could either have a red one or a black 60K+ one.

I was thinking of resale price as I dont do that many miles really.

The things to think/ask about/look for is the water pump (any faults, ever changed---as is common fault with plastic impellers) service history (all there not some missing, missed that one etc...) and have a really good look around it.

Other than that once a good check up done and a few things changed should be great for that money.

Good Luck Mate

Most modern engines are good for 200k if well looked after and Timing belt is changed at the correct interval!

One thing i would check on that is whether or not the timing belt(cam belt) has been changed as it's around that time it needs or should have been changed!

Mine is just about to go past the 100,000 mark. It has been looked after and the only sign of the high milage are the stone chips on the bonnet and bumper. The interior still looks fine. You wouldnt believe its done that many miles if you were sat in it.

to be honest, you could do a lot worse.
ie, a lower mile car that has been shunted, or done lots of short journeys which would more than likely do more damage.
if its a straight car, then i think you should go for it. its a lovely car for a great price.

if its had the 80k service then i think the cam belt should have been checked an changed if neccesary. So potentially one less thing to have to think about if you confirm it was done.

Echo all from above - with FSH and good nick then dont let the mileage put you off.

Ours has done 75,000 and its a cracking little motor - we've really looked after it and it sounds / looks like it has done half the mileage (and no, its not for sale so I havent got an agenda for saying this!)

What would be the impact of a car missing a service early in its life, or even missing a few, but having full SSH from say 40k to 80k.

I only ask because I've noticed that the service doesn't include alot, so iff the plugs/oil/filter/brake fluid/coolant/cambelt etc have all been looked after since, what would it matter if they weren't before hand?

could there be permanent damage by using old oil or plugs, even if they're sorted now?

If it has a FSSH it should be fine, high miles usually equals motorway miles so it places less strain on the engine than short journeys.

In a word... yes.

Any damage caused to an engine internally is permenant. Plug wise, I can't think of any damage that may occur, but with an incorrect gap there may be some. More worrying would be the missed oil change, meaning the engine would be running on dirty oil past its best - this could damage bearings, seals, piston rings and cylinder walls, and generally accelerate wear on the engine.

I know mines not a LCR (will be soon tho, picking my new baby up on the 27th) in fact its not even a leon...its an ibiza, but... its covered 110k miles, still on the same exhaust, rear disks and only had one set of new coil packs... So i dont think you have much to worry about. Just make sure its got a FSSH.

Did i mention I getting a LCR on the 27th ;-)
