not sure where to post this but anyway......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have found a supplier who ships these leads quite cheap.

the leads work with VAG COM and fit most of the new models.

anyone else interested if im going to order some?

im getting some costs now.

they should work with the freeware vag com software.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/download/current.html

pm me if you would like one, or ill go ahead and order one myself. Its just the cable.

deleted first post as some one said it was in the wrong place.

anyway.

these ones are not cheap on ebay, the older leads only work on cars up to 03 plate. the Hex ones on ebay are £89.

this works on cars up to 06 and newer, this is the CAN type cable for new cars. ones on ebay only work on older cars hence why they are cheap.

however if some one does have a source for these cables cheap then let me know otherwise these come from hong kong.

full spec :-

Features:
1.COM connector plugs into most modern laptops!
2.Compatible with the latest cars which require a direct CAN connection for diagnostics including all Golf-5 platform cars and latest Audi A3, A6 and A8.
3.Protocol timing indistinguishable from a real VAG/VAS tool. Works reliably even with "difficult" control modules such as the 1991-1994 1Z Audi TDIs and the 1993-1994 Audi 2.6L with Hella ECU.
4.Built-In VAG-Saver functionality -- instantly alerts the user if either the K/K1 line or the L/K2 line is shorted to Ground or Vbatt.
5.Full support for dual-K lines found in "new" (B6/8E chassis Audi A4 and 2002+ Audi A6 -- no VAS-6017 required -- no manual switches!
6.Fully backwards compatible with older cars using a single K-line or
K plus L.
7.Bi-Color (red/green) status/activity LED
8.Support HEX-USB-CAN Interface compatible with VAG-COM 512.4

Hmm, "Full spec" is ripped almost verbatim from our site.

You can buy a Chinese-made "Rolex" watch quite cheaply too. But of course it's illegal (trademark / copyright issues meaning sellers potentially face prosecution) and if you go swimming with it, it will likely leak and rust.

I have used a cheapo cable from ebay and although it took some messing about to get going it worked OK.

I have used proper Ross Tech cables previously and to be honest there is no comparison. A lot less messing and the latest version of VAG-COM is much better to use. I bought a proper one myself and it is quality item, with back up available.

Buy an original.

Yeah I can see your point however the ross-tech packs are just too expensive for me.

but saying the chinese would be bad quality?

they make some of the best components in the world.....

all im looking for is a cheap alternative that will lead me into getting diags for my car.

in short a generic lead and vagcom trial version is enough to get by
if you want the full version and dealer backup pay more.

personally ive had a cable for around a year of ebay and i cant fault it. (com port version)

yeah exactly my views brendy,

thing is i have to have the CAN bus one for newer cars which are expensive even when generic, but this hong kong supplier does do them at a reasonable price.

just dont see why people should have to pay a lot just for the new protocols. same with everything i guess :)

just dont see why people should have to pay a lot just for the new protocols.

It might have something to do with the time, effort, and money we invested to make a product that works with those protocols? It's amazing how cheap the Chinese can sell something when they don't have to develop it; when they just copy it.

You should also be aware that it is not possible for an unauthorized party make an interface that works with VAG-COM on CAN and do it legally. The firmware in legitimate CAN capable VAG-COM interfaces has authentication features based on digital signatures which are mathematically impossible to reproduce without duplicating the firmware in it's entirety -- in other words stealing it from us.
