Hey all

A mate with a mk3 Cupra asked me to scan her car for faults

Her airbag light was always on but nothing else, no engine management light.
Although she did say the other day she was going about 70 and put her foot down and the car just wouldn't go any faster....

The following have came up

Engine
16825

Airbag
00588
01217

ABS
01314

Now it's the ABS fault code i'm not 100% on -
01314 - Engine Control Module: No Communications

You'd think this would be an ABS sensor or wire thats gone but is it related to the MAF?? would the best way to check be to do some logging on the maf

I'll continue searching but i'm sure i've seen before that although it says its an ABS fault it really isnt.

The codes come up as –
16825/P0441/001089 - EVAP Emission Control Sys: Incorrect Flow

Possible Causes
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80) faulty/jammed
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Solenoid Valve (N115) faulty/jammed
Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Sealing faulty
Pipes between Tank Breathing and Throttle Body leaky/blocked
Possible Solutions
Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
Perform Output Test
Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Solenoid Valve (N115)
Check Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister
Perform Basic Setting
Check Pipes between Tank Breathing and Throttle Body

00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)

Possible Symptoms
Airbag Warning Light active
Possible Causes
Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty
Coil Spring with Slip Ring (F138) faulty
Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Wiring from/to Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95)
Check Coil Spring with Slip Ring (F138)
Check Airbag Igniter Driver Side (N95)

01217 - Side Airbag Igniter; Front Driver Side (N199)

Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active
Possible Causes
Wiring/Connectors from/to Side Airbag Igniter, Front Driver Side (N199) faulty
Side Airbag Igniter, Front Driver Side (N199) faulty
Possible Solutions
Check Wiring/Connectors from/to Side Airbag Igniter, Front Driver Side (N199)
Check Side Airbag Igniter, Front Driver Side (N199) faulty
Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)

01314 - Engine Control Module: No Communications

Possible Causes
CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module faulty
Possible Solutions
Check CAN-Databus Wiring/Connectors from/to Engine Control Module
Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)
Usually Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) 125+ show the current Communication Status

Some of those faults could be from a while back - when was it last scanned? If you clear the codes and take it for a drive which ones come back?

The EVAP fault codes would indicate that the N80 is perhaps no longer connected - have they removed the carbon canister? If not, check all vac lines and connections going to it (black box behind the washer bottle).

Regarding the ABS fault, sounds more like an issue with the CAN BUS channel that prevented VAG COM from reading the controller at all. Again, if you clear the codes and re-scan do you still get this?

The possible causes returned by the Ross Wiki outline what really needs checking in each instance, assuming these are persistent faults.

cheers for the reply

scanned for codes and cleared them, but only had time to take the car 200 metres up the road and back, scanned again and no codes were back at that time

I'll get her to drive around for a few days and then will scan it again and see what comes up
