Help me find my whistle!

Ok those of you who have seen my car go know it screams like a banshee! Well its starting to get on my wick as im 99% sure now im losing power due to this.

The car is stg 2 revo with BF DP back and never made the noise until it had the zorts fitted. Ive had the down pipe removed and refited and sealed, blocked the pipe for a second to see if its blowing from anywhere and nothing. BBT mechanic came out with me and said it sounds more like a resonance in the second silencer but im now convinced there’s no way it can be that. The car has been in the air several times with a new coilover set etc fitted so most of the system has been checked and no obvoise signs of a blow.

The noise only came about when the new zorst was fitted so im thinking it could be this as ive checked all the pipes I can lay my hands on and there all tight with no obvious splits. The noise is there with revo off but only very very very quietly (I would never have noticed it if I hadn’t been chipped). It is also only apparent when the car is under heavy right foot load around 5k rpm.

Anyone that’s heard the car or if any of this sounds like something you can fix please let me know as I want to get it sorted ASAP as I don’t want to drive all the way up to BF to get them to strip, check and refit the system.

Ive also compared it to other LCRS with like for like systems and none of the others do it!

Why are you convinced it isn't related to the second silencer?

The noise may not be due to gas escaping the system but may be faulty baffles within the box itself?

If it occurs under load at a specific engine speed it sounds like a resonance thing to me.

I had a Group N Peugeot Sport exhaust on an old 106, the noise it made at one specific engine speed (unfortunatly the same as 70mph in top gear) actually made me feel sick. It was a common problem with that system but as it was designed for use in rallying, nobody cared. Suffice to say i sold it on after having it fitted for about a week.

As most people have commented that its coming from the front of the car (so could be the cat i suppose)

And its a deffinate high pitch whistle noise like the sound of rushing air, i really nede to get a sound clip but it sound slike a magnifide turbo whistle

to be honest, i think you need to swap the exhaust to another one to compeltely rule it out. What happened to your OE one after you had the blueflame fitted?

If you say it's been checked and it's defo not the joint of the DP and Turbo and you are 100% happy it's not coming from further back maybe it's the turbo itself or the turbo/mani join??? Maybe a gasket failure there?

If it's near the cat area could it be a leak from the holes for the lambda probes?

I'd be tempted to strip the whole lot of and refit it to be sure each join/gasket was properly sealed. Would allow you to inspect each section as well.

If you are only generating it at 5000rpm under load, then obviously the car is moving and there must be a fair amount of induction/turbo/engine/road noise for this whistle to compete with. Funny thing with sound is that where you hear it isn't always where it's coming from!

Is it only when the turbo is on 'boost' as it where?

I had this problem shortly after fitting my DP and having stg2. Turned out to be the turbo is fooked, but its done 92k. I checked by taking off the TIP and checking for play in the shaft of the turbo.

Very similar sounding symptoms.

are you sure its not just a boost pipe somewhere? i had the same symtoms for ages,checked everything twice and still had this high pitched whistle,which no-one could find.Eventually put it on the rollers at westec and they held it on boost listening and wobling everthing.After 2 hrs(obviouly with breaks inbetween runs) a tiny leak was found on one pipe,not from where it sounded like it was comming from,but every time jock moved the pipe the noise would change/stop.Would never have found it any other way.

Swapping zorts really isnt an option as i havent got he 1k to go the only other option of a APR down pipe plus the rest of the system to match.

Think im going to have to book it into a rolling roda to try and find the source of the sound and take it from there.

Its stupidly loud thats why i know its there, its the first thing everyone says "f*ck me it sounds as if its super charged", as tahts the sound but about 3 times louder

Need a cheap and cheerfull rolling road then by the sounds of it

I havent fella as ive got a new phone but if you could find some taht woudl be great.

Im having a new Down Pipe fitted tommorow and having all the pipes at the back looked at (if there is any??)

Also tonight im going to re-srevice my DV to see if that helps

sounds like a leak from the manifold.

my old car used to make a similar noise to what you describe when the turbo was loosening on the manifold
