HELP! ibiza now running right, driving me mental!

finaly got the gearbox back in the ibiza and it moves, nice and smoothly too, no crunching at all clutch is making a a slight whiring noise but i can sort that later.
the prob now it is running like a bucket of crap.
starts alright, but wont rev, when u rev it it just sucks in a load of air and splutters and dies.
it also has an eratic idle that keeps speeding up, then droppign right down makign the engine shake.
when i disconect the lambda sensor this make it a little better just leads to loads of black smoke comign out my exhaust lol.
any ideas what this could be? it seems to be an electronic problem to do with the fueling, as if when i open it up, it sucks in enough air, just does not increase the fueling.
on a more positive note, gtot my angel eyes on today love them.

have you at some point disturbed the timing?
Sounds possible that the timing has been altered and needs setting up again

yeah sadly i have, changed 2 of the HT leads as they were pretty haggard, got them all on in the right order, went to start it and nothing, then went through about an hour of playing about with the ht lead set up, and a new dizzy cap as the contact fell otu of mine, ( halfords replacment is crap! ), got it all set up in the correct firing order of 1-3-2-4 and still nothing, turned out a connector plug that goes to the throttle body had came loose, reconnected this and it started. i hate electrics.
i know the basics of adjusting the timing by rotating the dizzy body but surely it cant be that out? the cap can only be clipped on 2 ways, one correct way and one way 180 degrees out.
i will double check all this tomoro, but it seems more of a fueling problem to me :S

how do i go about adjusting the timing? is it just a case of loosenign the 2 allen head crews on the distibutor and twisting the whole unit to either advance or retard the ignition? or is it a little more involved than that?
im only used to this sort of thing on my landrover, and an essex v6 is a little less technologicaly advanced than my 1.4 lol
also, could a mod edit the thread title for me? only just realised ive put 'now' instead of 'not' cheers

you need to check that its all at TDC and then just try and adjust it from the dizzy to bring it in

ok cheers, i will give that a go in a min, i tried that yesterday, got it all lined up to tdc, then made sure the firing order was all corect to no avail .
could there be any sensors that are throwing it all out? as it seems its more a case that when revved, its underfueling, also can hear a slight hissing noise after i rev it which could point to a vacuum leak?

alrigh all, tis now sorted
as usual, was a simple but annoying reason lol.
the larger electircal connector that goes to the throttle body was on the wrong way round lol, it would be the only connection plug not to have a location lug so you can only put it on one way wouldnt it lol!.
