Hi everyone,

I was losing coolant for weeks and after investigating seems the two seals between the heater Matrix and the inlet/ outlet pipes were shot. I got everything off ok but when putting the the aluminium pipes back with new seals into the matrix t, water is leaking worse than before. Im guessing reseating these pipes correctly is more tricky than first thought.
Once you tighten down the 6mm bolt between the pipes I would have thought alighnment would pretty much be sorted.
Need tips about seating these pipes if possible. Hopefully the matrix itself is not leaking.

Cheers

OK,
The local street mechanic and i have had a go at this today and my worst fears are now realised!. Theres too much water coming out after clamping the pipes down snugly; it seems the matrix has gone and flooding out at this particular junction. Ironically, people report water in the footwells when they go, but this never happened to me. So, ive looked at the Haynes manual and its rated as a four spanner job involving taking out the dashboard, im wondering is there any other ways of doing this on a 1.9tdi.
If not, its down to the local garage for me...or roping in the localstreet mechanic.

Mine was a pain to seal. I tried for a weak, then a friend who is a mechanic for SEAT came round and did it in 20mins. He reckons its really common and the best way is to remove a small part of the heat shield so you can see.Although not ideal he did seal it straight away.

Thanks for the reply, So just to clarify, I can get the 6mm bolt tightened with the pipes back in position , but water still gushes from this area, so im thinking the matrix has gone very close to this area.
What do you think?

There is a photo, of the problem for anyone reading or for your clarification of what I'm referring too.

Basicly I removed the heat shielding to the right of the photo then could feel the rings seat in correctly.

It was a pain in the arse to do, took loads of attempts and some red grease helped as well.

As you can see the pipes can steel moved within that bracket so just having the bracket tightened doesn't mean its sealed.

If you are from the NE area I can give you the number for someone to sort it cheap.

OK,

So your saying you also got the bolt to clamp down, but water still gushed out to begin with, then by removing some of the heat shield the pipes were allowed to fully engage.
When you say heatshield you mean the thick cloth insulation right. so should I cut some of this back. Still looks like theres lots left in your photo Not from N.E either im in London, thanks for offer.
I might put a zip tie round the pipes behind brackets to ensure they are not splaying out and remove heatshield. Also your photos upside down, hopefully it does not matter

FINALLY.....SUCCESS

I pulled back heat sheild cloth and ziptied pipes behind bracket and that has done the trick!!No leaks now. Have to take her on a run to see what heatings like..hopefully no matrix will be in order if its not warming up..maybe just a change in pollen filter which has been on the car over a year now, i believe a blocked one can interfere with your heat.
Funnily enough, when i was putting pipes in i could feel a very ..very faint snap as the pipes seated properly..only very slight mind you, but enough to give a slight bit of suction resistance when I withdrew the pipes whilst testing the fit.

Hello there, I'm so sorry for posting on this years after the original post. I am new to all this and have recently bought a seat Ibiza 1.9tdi 130 2006. I was unable to view the pictures that you posted of the heat shield.

Is there still someone in the NE area that can help me with this problem?? Could I possibly get your number and explain the problem? It's just I'm not too good at typing out all the issues and details.

Cheers

Hello, sorry I'm new to this and rubbish with technology. I have a very similar problem (water leaks). What I'm not entirely sure if it's the two metal pipes/seals/heater matrix itself. However I was wondering if you can PLEASE put me in contact with the guy from the NE area you mentioned. I travel there regularly but I don't want to remove the two metal pipes and bracket in case it is indeed the matrix system leaking. Also I'd probably end up breaking something else if I tried

Thank you
P.s. I can't see the photo you posted around the heat shield.
