When i've been stood still in traffic I have been noticing a very strong smell of neat fuel, after lots of crawling around the car I have found that the fuel lines go down the inside of the drivers side wing, into the chassis and out in to the open just under the drivers seat.

This is where the leak is occuring as there is petrol mixed in with the dirt on the under side of the car, my question is how do i get at the fuel lines to repair them? The area is very tight between the engine and the bulkhead, then they go into the chassis.

Is this an expensive job if i pop it down the local mechanics?

I think it is most likely the fuel return hose as the smell only seems to become evident when the car is sat idling in traffic for a period of time. The colour of the hoses are black, clear and blue.

Any help appreciated.

Have you checked the two rubber fuel hoses connecting to the engine from the hard plastic fuel lines? Common for the seal to the hard plastic line to deteriorate.

Whilst the engine is running check to see if you can see any evidence fuel seeping from the rubber hoses and running down the hard line.

The rubber fuel hoses are about a tenner each from SEAT plus some fuel line clips.

Here's a possible relevant thread:

Thanks for the link, I remember that thread.

It doesnt seem to be fuel coming out of the top of the pipes, more like fuel leaking further down the lines.

I've got it booked into the garage so i guess I will find out soon enough if it hasn't gone up in smoke.
