Hi people

We have a VW Golf mark iv 1.6 petrol, 16v, MY 2001. the car has been running “lumpy” recently and it feels like the car has lost power. From the research I have done I believe it could be the ubiquitous coil pack problem or a faulty Ht lead or a MAF? Anyone car to take a stab at what is wrong?

When the car is idle the needle moves slightly up and down and is accompanied with fluctuation of the engine…like someone was turning the idle up and down. hope iv explained this well enough for you to understand.

The car also has a tendency to cut out. For example if I start up in the mornings it might take a few turn overs to start the car. I changed the battery and still experienced this problem, but also have experienced the problem when the car is warm.

Now im not the most mechanically minded person. So I am asking those with the 1.6 petrol engines in your octavia to helps me out here.

I want to get an idea if other have experienced the same problem/symptoms, if so how did you sort it out?

Id like to get a views before paying for a diagnostic test via VAG presumably?

Thank in advance for help, if it helps the car has covered 22000 miles

I've had starting problems, both cold and hot engine, which were put down to a faulty engine temp sensor (think this has been replaced twice now). Also had problems with eratic idling and the last time engine revs sticking at 5000. This was put down to dirt in the throttle body which was cleaned and reset by the dealer (also had the thottle body replaced under warranty the first time it happened). See below for throttle body reset problems I've had.

Hope this helps.

Hi. Doesn't sound like the coilpack to me. In my experience, engine would really be very lumpy and there would be distinct lack of power as only three cylinders would be firing. Engine light would also be flashing away on the dashboard.

thanks for all your responses..the point you made about having to press the accelerator lightly to start the car, i have this too..so maybe it could be the temp sensor.

thanks for your help people. just an update, iv had the temp sensor replaced, and something else which escapes my tired mind at the moment.

i still had the car cutting out at various point, ie when cold and warm. pointed this out to the garage that did the work and they told me bring it in on monday where they will clean the "throttle body" which ties in what some of you helpful guys have said:) so thanks again for that guys..will keep you updated of the progress..or lack of it..

just on a different note, while getting to this post i passed this one

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=78597

very interesting..inparticular the point that was made about

"Problem started with a slight hesitation in acceleration after changing gear though at the time I didn't think it was a gearbox problem (Had been having throttle body problems"

i have this "slight hesitation" too especially in second gear...very annoying..so do you guys think my gearbox is on the way out? ifi helps..when the gearbox is cold ie when foirst starting up in the morning..when i change from 1st to 2nd..it crunches...when i change it VERY slowly it doesnt...but even when i do a moderately slow change in the morning, it crunches..

any opinions guys?

thanks again..night :sleepy:
