Help!!!! Airbags just went off!!

Hi guys, in deep doo- doo here.

My brothers 2009 Ibiza just blew her bags off!

He tells me it wasnt his fault and may only have clipped a kerb but whatever, theres two empty Tesco bags hanging out of the dash and steering wheel! The seatbelts of course are also screwed.

Anyway, he took it to seat who told him he would have to sell his left kidney to pay for replacements as it requires a new dashboard, seatblets and control module. My younger brother is quite fond of his left kidney so wasnt all that keen on letting Seat sort the problem, especially since the genius didnt have fully comp insurance.

Sooooo it has fallen upon yours truly to fix this issue

The car is undamaged anywhere else so thats a bonus but as far as I can make out the dash, sterring wheel centre and both belts need replaced, also the airbag control module? need sorting. Once that lots replaced the computer needs reset to eliminate the fault and indicator light.

I'm handy (ish) with the spanners but would appreciate any advice or links you guys can give me before tackling this problem.

Also getting the right airbag kit is proving to be a hassle too. The car is a three door 2009 model but I think its the later one? I think the J in the chassis number indicates the later model?

The early 2009 kit is available online for £350-£500 but the later model is sourced online for £750+vat and delivery.

Please, please guys help or my bro is getting slapped.

3rd party on an 09 plate?! Wow

Sounds like you've listed all the components you need. By seat belts I assume you mean the pre tensioners - not sure if they're controlled by another module.

You want the later model kit though if it's on an 09 plate I suspect (if it looks like below)

Ho Mork, yeah thats the one, even th ecolour is the same.

Aye, third party fire and theft on an 09 plate, and he bought the car two years ago!!!!!

No prizes for guessing what I think of that decision!

Do you know if there is an online manual available for the car that may assist in me pulling the dash out?

Also, any idea where parts can be bought any cheaper.

I'd be asking seat why the air bags have gone of when there is no damage on the car..... Kerb or pothole shouldn't set it of surely

Already tried that, they probably reckon my wee bro isnt worth admitting responsibility and risking a multi-million pound recall.

Still its a pain.

I'd have to agree with that approach - and I'd go as far as to leave out the slight kerbing issue as that should be of no relevance if there is no obvious (visible) damage - that is not on!

Next thing, would be to get a price for fully comp as normally it does not cost much more that 3rd party I've heard.

Whoops just missed your last posting, I'd expect Seat UK to "help" with this repair - or he can shout all about it to warn possible Ibiza buyers, then see what Seat thinks of that honest bit of negative publicity!

THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED TO ANY CAR!

He should explain what his next move to Seat UK and give them a chance to sort things out - then launch the public warning if they do nothing!

Ive just been informed that Seat said there was some subframe damage but could t say when this occurred. As I said my bro says "I didnt hit anything aright!!!!!!" They seem not to have accepted that answer even though he said it with vigor.

I am not a big fan of his driving if truth be told, needless to say i have two cars but I'm not lending him either of them while this gets sorted lol.

Whilst the Ibiza is off the road he has bought a ford Focus for £500 but unfortunately the engine mounts snapped yesterday and the engine just fell out of it. Not the luckiest bloke with motors Im sure youll agree. He had insured it fully comp but too little too late lol

Still, all this jovality isnt getting the Ibiza sorted. Parts, where can I get em cheap?

It does sound odd that all the airbags have gone off, I was under the impression it depended where the impact was as to which airbag deployed. It could be worth investigating if that is how they should work and if it is you could have a claim, possibly!

He was pulling in to park outside Starbucks and was suddenly slapped up the chops by a miniature bouncy castle launching out of his steering wheel so its understandable if he didnt notice if hed wacked a parked car? lol

If it wasnt so expensive it would be funny, saying that it is still funny like.

Much as I enjoy entertaining you chaps with this merry tale is there anywhere you know I can source this kit for less than £750+vat?

Either he is really unlucky or he's telling fibs! Either way I thought you could insure a car over £5000 3rd party or has that changed? I'm surprised the insurer let him if I'm honest.

Anyway this isn't helping getting it fixed. I'm sure there's a Haynes manual for the Ibiza to aid you with dash removal

Haynes manual, yeah. Will have to check and see if theres one online available.

Ebay have the older model kit but not the new one.

Re the insurance yeah, ridiculous! the car was two years old when he bought it and it was only insured TPFT??

As far as I'm aware there isn't a Haynes available yet, but if there is now I'm buying one. Send a message to Dave at Sere motors on here mate, just give him the VIN number and he should be able to get you a better price for the parts

The best place for genuine Seat parts is Sere Motors, one of the forum sponsors. Give David a ring, he will give you the best price possible. His number is 028 90385336
