Hello, and cambelt on 1.4

Hi all from new member,

Joined Cupra as I'm trying to help a friend w/ servicing his "frying pan" 1.4 SPI Ibiza. I will change his cambelt on Saturday and wonder if there's anything specifics to IBIZA.

I've changed many cambelts before and know the general run TDC, marks etc. procedure. I plan on removing camcover and

1. Set cyl 1 to TDC (check rotor and pulley)
2. check timing marks on sprockets (where/how many on the 1.4?)
3. loosen tensioner
4. slide old belt off
5. slide new one on, taught on short side
6. replace tensioner
7. tension with the old "thumb" method
8. spin by hand a few times

Are there any weird tools req?
Is the 1.4 an interference engine?

regards,

nicolas

Alrite mate...

done the same job about a month ago on my 1.4. The only thing which is useful really is a torque wrench so u no u are tightening any bolts to the correct torque setting. ull also need an allen key for removing one of the auxillary drive belt pulleys which stops u removing the bottom cam belt cover. probably an idea to change the aux drivebelt whilst you got it all off as they only cost bout £7.

Ul find timing marks on the edge of the cam and water pump sprockets. they r little dimples. these should match up with obvious points inside the cam belt cover. ull see what im talkin about wen u take the upper belt cover off.

There is no need to take the cam cover off unless u really wana check the cam lobes n that for wear which im sure they will prob be ok. jus means u have to replace the gasket. Oh n if u do take the cover off be careful with the three bolts. they are a stupid design and really thin at one point. I hardly put any force on one of mine and it f*****g seared off leavin the end of it stuck in my cylinder head!!!!!!!!!

the only other tip is to remove the spark plugs. i didnt and wondered why it was so hard to turn the engine over with a wrench! doh

Hope this all helped n if u are used to doin it isnt too patronising!!

Thanx for the info,

So the aux pulley has to come to be able to remove the bottom cover. Thanx for the heads up...
