I found some gunk (white ish) on my dipstick last weekend- mainly near the top. Have checked it every day since- no gunk (non on the oil cap either). Is this due to the really cold weather or do I have a possible head gasket problem.
PS managed to do the fabia wiper conversion yesterday- well worth it though not as good as HIDS:)

emmmm, is there any on the filler cap, does the expansion tank look clean, have you bean doing many sort journeys, have you owned the car long... finding it on the dipstick is normally worse than finding it on the cap (not a lot tho).. it would be at the top of the dipstick whether its condestation or water as it will sit on top of oil... actully how bad was it a little or a lot

Dont worry at all mate, that dipstick pipe will be slightly cooler so will get condensation, and as the oil doesnt circulate that well inside the dipstick pipe itll mix slightly with the condensation present.

Usually there is a plastic tubing on the dipstick, that needs to be intact, if not get a new one that will fit snuggly, probably a couple of quid from a dealers.

Unless you have very very thick gloop everywhere under your oil filler cap dont worry.

Nothing on the filler cap, no will keep checking it... Fingers crossed. Had the car for over 3 years 57k (03 plate Cupra 180), cambelt and water pumpt done at 51k. Oil change every 6k miles, so well maintained.

I have never noticed gunk on the dip stick but have noticed it on several of my vag cars filler cap which is just condensation and is normal for very cold short journeys. look for oily film on top of your water in the expansion tank and if your worried get a compression check or have your coolant checked with a tester which most garages should have

Would have thought if it was HGF that it would be noticable in the expension tank and/or inside the oil filler car rather than just the dip stick? Thats if it is HGF?
