What do fellow 8v gti owners see on there temp guages when driving in normal conditions. Mine dosnt seem to be getting up to temperature (along with other problems) especially when moving at a constant speed on the motorway. Water temp wont reach half way and i was getting oil temps of 76 degrees last nite. Usually sits at half way on water temp and 90sih on the temp.

By the way iv got a problem with moisture in the oil

Cheers! :D

drain the oil then!

Flush & refill with decent semi or fully synthetic (and a new oil filter)

You want to see numbers around the 90 mark at somepoint in your journey

cheers guys, will be doing all this the weekend including testing/renewing the thermostat. wish it wasnt so dark of a nite or i could do it sooner.

Whats a good engine flush to use? will it be fine on a 88k engine? never used it.

Iv got some semi synthetic 10w 40 to go in, garage dude told me not to run fully synthetic

Cheers!

Just stick a decent 10 40 semi synth in it. Its probably what its always been ran on anyways......

Reminds me this thread, my 8v gti needs a oil and coolant change. Just can't be pestered in the current weather!

Anyone know what coolant is best to use in the 8v AGG ? Just incase there is a special type that doesnt eat the hoses or joints lol

88'c under normal cool driving conditions, usually sits on 90ish like m0rk has said. That'll probably be after 15mins driving give or take 5mins, depending on ya driving.

when u change the thermostat, can u take some pics of where it is?

im sure i located it before (bottom left of engine, near elbow bend in coolant piping), but it was really difficult to get good access to it, so i gave up in the end....)

good luck with the problem solving, i'll be changing my coil pack aswell this week end.

cheers for the replies

just been for another fruitful drive, temps are still mad. i hit a country lane doing steady 50ish and water temp droped to below a 1/4:confused: let it sit when i got home for a few mins and temps steadily rised. I can see myself going round in circles.

Fuey, will take a pici for you, im positive its in that plastic elbow. theres a metal clip to undo and it should come off (i hope).

Have a look at the coolant resevoir. This happened on my 1.4, basically, there's a seal around the centre of the plastic fluid container you can see, this may have developed a crack so there's no pressure. After going for a run in the car, open the hood and have a look for this leaking.

Under normal circumstances it wouldn't be good to remove the cap after a drive, but I reckon you could quite easily as there wouldn't be much pressure build up.

there was pressure there when cold so im asuming its ok, will check when up to temp tho.

just changed oil coolant etc. motorfactors couldnt get a coolant temp sensor and couldnt do thermostat as i cant get to it, Fuey its in the place ur probably thinking of, if you figure out how to change it can you tell me please

i cleaned breather hoses and ran engine with that flushing stuff and no moisture appeared so hopefully that will be sorted now. :D

cheers
