Grinding Noise on Full Lock Help!

I have a 57 2.0TFSI Leon FR with DSG.

Only been serviced about month or so ago but has developed a grinding noise when moving from stand still when steering is on or close to full lock (sounds like something is rubbing or 'dry'). Doesnt appear to happen when moving off in a straight line.

Handling doesnt appear to be compromised.

Is there anything obvious I can check or is there an easy fix?

A few days ago I did drive through a small fjord across a country lane, could this have caused water damage somewhere?

I havent checked but believe the power steering is topped up (assuming this was done on service)

Any guidance on what potential problem could be and if this is something I can fix myself would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like it needs a new steering rack. This has been a common vag problem but I thought it would have been fixed in newer cars like yours. Take it to Seat and they will replace it under warranty.

Ill give them a ring after the Easter Break and get them to look into it.

Will keep you all posted

Suspension strut bearing or something similar- I had exactly the same, new steering rack made no difference. They took it back in, change something to do with the strut and it was fine.

My May 08 Cupra 10k miles needs a new steering rack per the mechanic at its recent service. Very noisy when low speed manouvering. Would have thought they would have sorted this fault by now as posts go back a few years saying it is a problem. Had an 07 MK2 FR before this and the rack on that was noisy although never had it changed. Was beggining to think that perhaps they were naturally noisy but this time it is excessive.

had something similar ... it was the front drivers brake pad had warn down and needed replacing .. that was the first signs that it was warn out..

you should get a brake warning light, but the wear sensor is only on the passenger side brake pads ... meaning if you like me get wheel spin comming off roundabouts quite often .. then usually the traction control is brake the drivers side wheel - hence it wearing quicker (25% quicker in my case!)

i once went round a long left hand bend reasonably quickly and the steering wheel started juddering even when the road went straight it still carried on juddering for like 1/4 mile never had it since, could it be the start of steering rack problems?

Just done a quick check under the wheel arches at the front.

I will keep monitoring progress as still appears to be a slight grinding (I think possibly the drivers side brake pad looks a bit uneven).

However, have found something rubbing.

Inside the wheel arches seems to be an additional rubber strap (about 20" long) fastened inside the wheel arch to the body kit (I have no clue what they are there for and would struggle to see if I just removed them it would make any difference what so ever!!)

Anyway, the passenger side one had come off one of its mounts and twisted, this was rubbing the wheel on full lock. Simply removed (you need a star shape headed screw driver to do this) and repositioned.

I don't believe however this was thew cause of the initial grind but that does appear to have gone albeit maybe temporarily for now!

Will keep an eye on it and get it back to dealers if re-occurs
