Well as post really, did oil/filter change plus gearbox oil change...And decided i wanted to remove sump to clean oil pickup pipe....GLAD i did, found excess sealant inside sump, some of which had got stuck in Oil pickup gauze...

Cleaned all the gunk out and resealed as per previous advice. (Thanks for info chaps)

A worthwile and worthy few hours...

Just buy a new pickup as they gauze de-grades with time, as does the seal. As for the sealant you only need a small ammount, so it looks like you have drawn round it with a felt tip, and try to keep it to the ouside edge. Ive seen some people go crazy with this and its ooozing out the sides.

Worth doing on any car with a few miles on it.
I've owned mine since new. I changed my sump due to thread being stripped.
My pick up was dirty but by no means chocking, piece of mine though

All you need is good access/ramps/jacks etc. 10mm socket and extension, with ideally wobbly joint.
The worst 4 bolts to access are between Flywheel and sump and recessed. (where the wobbly bit comes in handy)
And i bought the correct sump sealant from VW £17!!

Just take time....

May need o-ring/seal on external pick up pipe too. I just resealed with sump sealant!! Leak free at present.

As they say, use small bead on outside edge for sealant...Mine had bits of gasket in gauze...

If same as mine you will also have (an oil return pipe) from turbo i guess? Which bolts (2 bolts and gasket) to rear of sump externally..:)

so the red hot turbo oil goes straight to the sump? then to the oil pump and then through the filter? or to several places?

The oil from the turbo goes straight into the sump but is a very small amount compared to what is in there already.
The flow of oil is from the sump, in through the pick up line to the pump, out the pump through the galleries, back to the sump through the oil filter.

This shows you why good oil is a must

Normally sump - pickup - oil pump - oil filter housing - oil cooler - oil filter - block, head - drain back to block - sump, and between that, the oil feed of the block goes to the turbo then to the sump. Oil is oil at the end of the day, carlube will do the same job as castrol, only after a few miles the carlube will start to thin out a little and de-grade due to the heat, where as castrol have difrent additives/construction so lasts longer, hence better protection. A good geniune oil filter on performance cars helps oil pressure too. Also on oil changes you can use an engine flush to clear all the oil galleries and turbo oil lines out of any black sludge that formed. If you dont allow you engine to spin down or idle for a few seconds when stopped, your turbo bearings can create a black sludge whiich is burnt oil and can starve the turbo of oil.
