gearbox reverse problem!

Done loads of searches on here, but can not find the answer I'm looking for!

I have just bought a Mk2 Ibiza Cupra sport 2.0l 8v off my cousin, and a car to keep us going since the engine has gone on my wifes polo.

When selecting gears it is a little sloppy, but no worse then what the polo was!

But when going into Reverse it grinds like hell, and unless you keep your hand on the gear lever, it jumps out! have seen loads of topics where people are struggling to get into reverse, but it will go in fine, just doesnt want to stay in!

Any help apprchiated!

Hello mate :) it could be that super reliable pedal box which usually gives way at any time:censored: is starting to go, does it sqeek when you press the clutch down and up? cables rarely stretch as they are thick steel wire, but try ajusting cable first you do this by undoing the i think its 8mm small nut at the end of the clutch cable on the gear box and wind in the 13mm nut to take up any slack if there is any.
Also is you clutch and brake pedal level? :)

Hi mate don,t take it the wrong way:) i found over the years replacing loads of clutch cables on cars because they usually get sticky and have trouble trouble running through the sheath.
If you measure a cable which is thought to be stretched with a new one there is next to nothing in it.
The ajustment on the cable takes up the play from the clutch plate, worn fingers and clutch fork which can have alot of play in it from were and tear.
As the cable is quite a thick steel multistrand cable the shear strenth is massive it would probably tale a 1 ton weight if you managed to rig something up to test it without stretching much if at all :):)

pretty sure this will have an 020 box, if so its got the same linkage as a MK2 Golf. I have written a repair guide on most of the VW forums, which includes part numbers etc. I'd post a link but I'm not allowed ;)

Also grab your gearstick and lift it upwards, if there is any play the housing under the car has worn and needs to be replaced. again my linkage guide covers this, but I'm not 100% sure if the heat shield can be removed from a biza with the exhaust in place.

edit: also jumping out of reverse is a symptom of a damaged reverse gear, common problem on MK3 Golfs.
