Gearbox problem?

Recently my gear box has been a bit iffy with first gear. It can be hard to put into first gear, and can crunch too.

When Selecting first;

If i am rolling up to lights i cant prepare and put the car into first, i instead have to wait untill im at a complete halt before selecting first. If i try to do it while rolling, it makes a horrible crunch.
About 5 month or so ago, i had it crunch into first a few times, so i tried to stop slecting firt while rolling. It seems to have got worse now.

Also, when pulling away in first (This is a new thing, within the last week or two);

Lets say i was going to pull away at lights. So i lift the clutch pedal up, to engadge the gear. Except now, and this only happens in first, it feels as if the clutch engages alot sooner, almost instantly when i begin to lift the pedal. Although, it is not fully engaged at this point, it then has to go right up to the "real" biteing point and then the car pulls off.
Its as if it partially engages then slips up to biteing point.

I have no problems with any other gears, so i was thinking it may be to do with the syncro mesh ring?
Im not very clued up on gearboxes, but its something ive heard of in the past.

Oh and after being in first, reverse can be a little iffy getting into. Although if i got 2nd to reverse it seems fine.

Any ideas guys?
Much appreciated.

You can get these sort of symptoms from a failing clutch- if it does not disengage fully the changes you are having trouble with are the ones which would be troublesome, the fact it is worsening is, again, like a failing clutch. The fact that it seems to be engaging from near the floor and seems as if slipping? Clutch again I think.
Get that checked first, Diesels can be hard on their clutches as they deliver so much torque. How many miles has the car done, and how much stop start work?

The cars on 64,000 miles.

Generally not a great amount of stop and start each day. And i dont tend to go full pedal in first, normally wait untill im rolling in 2nd or 3rd before putting the foot down.

The car is a 2.0 TDI 140bhp. Totally standard Engine/Transmission wise.

Cheers for the replys.

If it was to be the clutch, why is it only affecting 1st??

Double clutching? as in matching the revs to the speed your doing before slecting the gear?
Im 90% sure that it goes in ok, i will go have a play and try this.

Sometimes at a standstill, it will simply not go into 1st, i have to let the car roll slightly before it will engage, almost as if the teeth just arent lineing up correctly.

double de-clutching is

.......when changing gear you put in neutral and let the clutch bag up, then put the clutch back in and shift into gear.

If i'm wrong i'm sure someone will correct me.

Double declutching = clutch down- neutral- clutch up- clutch down- next gear- clutch up.

Try that from 2nd to first whilst doing 5-10MPH and see if it's any better, if it is it's either your clutch not disengaging all the way (may need bleading/adjusting) or a fooked 1st gear synchro

Ok tried everything.

When doing about 10mph, i "double de clutched and it seemed to go in ok. Also i tried blipping the throttle to match the revs when going from 2nd > 1st, and it again went in ok.

Im sure that points to the 1st gear synchro as i originally suspected.

How big a job is replacing the synchro? I understand it will be gearbox out of the car and then opened up? What sort of costs involved?

gearbox out, maybe worth changing the clutch whilst its uot then basicaly strip gear unit. dread to think how much new synchro is will be a fair whack im sure. check than gear linkage is ok first before panicking too much

Cheers guys, going to try and get somewhere to have a look at it.

Best bet being a gearbox specialist? Rather than a main dealer?

Cheers guys.

Going to take it down to a mechanic who used to service my old car, let him have a look at it.

Had a breif scan of the manual, and unlike my old car, it show no mention of transmission fluid or gearbox oil etc, or even ways to check.

Unless, ive completely missed something?

Slightly different but still on the gearbox topic,

When mine is driven from cold and in first i get a strange whining noise but after the engine is warm i dont get it. It doesnt occur when the clutch is depressed.

Clutch bearing possibly, or gearbox oil? Not too sure.

EDIT: forgot to add the noise is only when pulling away, really low revs
