Hey,

Really need some advice on this one, driving along earlier, 2nd gear, doing 20mph(ish) puts my foot down a bit.. nothing stupid maybe half throttle, and bang, no drive and a horrible grating/whining noise.

Take my foot off the throttle, car coats along briefly, n i carefully contuine on my way.

However now after testing i can drive super super carefuly n it appears fine, as soon as i put some load on the box, i lose drive and get this horrible noise (only tried 1st, 2nd & 3rd), it's also become really hard to change gear when moving... however stationary changing gear is fine.

I've kinda ruled the clutch out as a possible cause, due to it being only a month old, and i've tried to see if the problem happens with the hand brake on tight in first giving it some stick, and all seemed normal, so it appreas to be a mechanical failure caused by torque/load.

Please help

I had two gearboxes go in my last Fiat(no suprise), and i could even engage any gears at all! But you say you can get going atleast in 1st,2nd and 3rd, well thats a good sign. Are you sure the clutch was fitted properly?

i fitted the clutch, and i'm positive everything was well when it went in (plus it's been in a month now)

However i have just had another thought... i'm wondering if something on the friction plate has failed (as i'm g60/vr6 clutch setup).

Thats a spot of luck! Thought it couldnt be your gear box, they are fairly solid on the ibiza's, plus they usually give away a few signs of going before they croke!

Yeh you can get it replaced under warranty id imagine.

it was a valeo conversion kit from Unipart, however i had the same kit fitted for the best part of 2 years previous to this with no problems.... before a coolant leak ruined the friction materal!

Interesting, could be down to a defect when being made, but I have heard of these kits being abit crud.

well the valeo kit is actually a g60 flywheel and VR6 clutch.. so the same as the common upgrade... it's known that the transmech kits are shite however, although i do believe thats just Transmech clutches in general.

I can't really see how the conversion kits can be crap, as they basicly are just a flywheel and a clutch... and the flywheel is fine, just the cluch has failed... but valeo clutches are known for being quiet good.

pulled the clutch out last night..

it seems on closer inspection that my kit was not a valeo one, as unipart had told me, altho it only has unipart markings on it, it looks identical to the Transmech one in the link i posted above (i never would of brought it if i knew this), it seems Unipart have changed there supplier for this application.

There are also other forums with similar storys relating to transmech clutches failing.

So i'm going to get the Valeo one from Euro Car Parts, the same as i had fitted for 2 years before my coolant leak ruined it, can't find any horror storys relating to these kits, and having used it my self before i'm quiet confident it will be sound.

Word of warning, Transmech clutches... AVOID!

All sorted now, fitted a valeo unit from Euro Car Parts :)

Took the knacked clutch back to unipart today... seems there was a recall on the transmech/unipart unit's for the exact fault i had anyway!
