Gave my Leon Cupra TDI the "Tunit" Treatment

Hello All,

After a few weeks or trying to decide how to get my 150 Cupra tuned I thought that I'd settled on getting a Revo remap. The only thing putting me off was the extra £150 for the SPS (I really think this should be included in the cost of the Revo). Also the fact the the Revo was a "one size" fits all map i.e. the map was created for the model of car but not my car specifically was also a worry.

So stated looking into the Bromley's "tunit" box. The claimed figures on the website looked as good as anything that I'd seen but I was struggling to find any reviews except from the Tunit site itself, which I was taking with a pinch of salt (plus most of them are from "diesel car magazine" where Tunit advertise).

Still a bit cautious I emailed tunit with a few questions and was quite surprised at the quality of the email which came back - It basically answered every question I had and a few more.

After a few more emails I decided to have the following.

Tunit Box
K&N Filter
Laptop Tune.

For the Laptop tune they basically put the car on the Dyno as standard, then with the tunit, then again and again unit the map is perfect for the car (It took about 6 dyno runs to get it perfect).

As standard my car was putting out a healthy 162.9 BHP with 258.8 lbft (they said that this was the highest they had seen from a 150PD, they normally see between 150 and 158), but had a couple of dips on the curves.

After being tuned the figures were impressive to say the least :)

Now its putting out 191.5 BHP with 307.6 lbft of torque

Then it was off for a test drive with one of the tunit guys to make sure I was happy.

The first thing I noticed was how much smoother the car was at slow speed /revs. Then after a few minutes we found a country road for me to play on.

The difference it has made is like day and night. Huge amounts of power in any gear but planting your foot in 3rd or 4th is just awesome.

I'm also pleased to report that I've not got any clutch slip as yet - I'll keep my eyes on it for a few 1000 miles just to make sure.

The other thing that I resigned myself to was a lot of smoke, but it's not smoking at all :) (in fact the guy that did the tuning said that's always something they look to avoid).

I've got a few 100 more miles on the car now and I'm still a very happy bunny. Money very well spent methinks.

Overall I can't recommend these guys enough - whether you want a tuning box or a remap is up to you but the quality of service you receive them is second to none (it is worth pointing out that I went to their HQ in Chorley, I'm not vouching for anywhere else).

Incase your interested it cost £630 all in.

Not cheap but I got a custom tune for my car (which I can remove in 5 mins if I need to) and a K&N filter.

Cheers

Am i right in thinking that your new map is kept on your tunit box then ? Sounds very handy. I have read a few adverts when i quickly;y flipped though Diesel car mag while in Woolworth but always took what i read with a big pinch of salt.

That's basically it mate, the box itself has 9 different posistions 1 - 9. You'd use these to tune it yourself I guess. When you have it Laptop tuned they set the switch to 5 and program it from there (which is where mine is staying :) )

Sounds a very good idea to me. Why pay an extra few hundred pounds to buy a device to remove a program which a mapping company has put on for you when getting it serviced etc when the map can be stored on a separate box and just removed. I had a Tunit box on my PD130 ibiza for a while and worked really well. I wounder why other tuning companies do not remap this way unless it is just the fact that they can then sell all these add on for a large profit !

Clearly someone who never looking inside their tunit then lol.

Laptop tuned.... plug into the fuel rail still? so just injects more fuel?

Yup just alters the fueling, which from what I can gather from t'interweb is what diesel tuning is all about.

I just had a basic Tunit box which you could alter the settings on a pin system.I know the boxes are just resistors but i thought the new digital ones had proper maps on them. If all Tunit was doing was just adding more fuel and not altering other parameters then surely it would start to smoke alot plus why put it on a dyno etc when the box already comes with different settings for the amount of fuel added that you can alter yourself. Just do not see why mapping companies cannot put a new map on a chip in a box that can be easily removed if that is what the customer want rather then mapping the cars ECU then getting the customer to pay even more money to get a device to "remove " the map for when it goes to the dealers etc.

307 lb/ft? Thats diesel torque. :D Sure he didn't mean 307 Nm which would equate to a very healthy (still) 210ish lb/ft?

Not too sure what you mean....

My car is a diesel - As it says in the title.

Added to the fact that this is in the TDI Tuning Section :)

And the figure is deffinately correct - I've got the dyno printouts infront of me.

As confirmed above, only fuelling adjusted (it doesn't plug into any other part of the loom [as told to me by tunit])

so if you wanted a map that is adjusted all over, rather than +25% fuel - then that's why yuou'd want it.

Although I wouldn't pay £600 for a tuning box I'm not anti t-b like many on here. You can buy a good digital tuning box for under £200 - but the lap top tune is a good idea, they can program the fuelling and injection duration for the power and torque to come in wherever you want it in the rev range.
As to those who say tuning boxes don't increase turbo boost like a re-map, well they do albeit indirectly (exhaust gas speed). Plus you can get a few quid back when you move the car on.
I've also had an AmD on click (in fact I still have the redundant dongle) and it works very much like the Tunit but has a full switching mode, mind you mine was very heavily discounted and I wouldn't pay anything like AmD charge for one! Shame it won't work on my current TDI.
I've had several examples of both boxes and re-maps over the years and there's not a lot between them in daily driving.
One of my tuning boxed cars spent many hours on the rollers at VanAaken experimenting, and it wasn't even one of their boxes!

Here is a pic you may be intrested in :)

http://www.bell-auto-services.co.uk/crbox.jpg

This is one of the early tuning boxes supplied by a well known comapny for about £500 :(

It has a variable 5K resistor in it to adjust the fueling/tricking of the sensors on the car.
the later boxes some had a 9 way jumper setting OR a 9 way switchable pot.
Even later they added a small MCU that adjusted the limits of the pot from 5K max to 10K etc etc

Food for thaught me thinks

PS here is where the Tunit box origanates from

Even so, it seems to be doing the job - I'm more than happy with the performance
