my mk1 fr tdi has what feels like a very notchy gearchange.

my car is a 150 fr tdi with a 6 speed box. Ive come from mondeo's and vectra's all pre 2001. The gearchanges on the vectra and mondeo is alot better than that of my leon.

I know the leon is a mk4 golf but for a german car surely the gearchange would be to the standard of the mondeo and vectra both 98 cars on cables and hydraulic clutches.

Is something worn, broken or is it just how it is on the leon.

I do plan on running a short shifter eventually but would like to find out why my car's gearchange is so notchy. My mates mk4 golf on a 5 speed box is alot better and thats a car thats falling to pieces.

please help me.

get someone to move it about while you look under the bonnet first, might be catching on something but could be an early sign of a worn clutch or the cylinder's playing up

will do but i doubt its catching as i remember looking over the gearbox when i stuck my head under the bonnet after purchasing the car.

I doubt its the clutch or owt as it feels like the gearchange with or without the clutch being pressed. It feels the same both engine running and not. Very notchy like a 306 feels or my old citroen ax's.

how many miles is on the FR?
sorry to shoot down seat but no one can match ford for gearboxes and linkages, they just feel perfect well into high miles and ive yet to come across a manufacturer who can do better. vauxhall im less sold on, they are hit and miss in my past experiances, some are great and others is like stirring about a bucket of fish with a garden hose.

see that's wierd as the mk1 mondeo tdi's i used to have to suffer had for me the most awkward gearchange i have ever used, mind you renault's came a pretty close 2nd with the old bar type ones

lot of doubt's there and if it's the same clutch on and off then maybe the clutch isn't pulling in as far as it should be ?

can only suggest you get it seen to and measure all is well first, if so it could be internal to the box breaking up ?

not got carpet mats in has it ? :)

my current mondeo td is on 318k and still has a sweet gearchange even though its been bodged as the ball linkage is worn. It still feels good and my gf's vectra feels just like my old one did and both cars were on 190k+.

flapper mk1 mondeos has linkage gearchanges. Mk2 mondeos and mk1 vectras had cable gearchanges with hydraulic clutches. Big difference. My fathers mk1 mondeo gearchange is better than the leon's.

The leon is on 102k but was a rep car so i suspect mainly motorway miles.
