Fuel pump

Hi all
I was trying to clear the tank the other day as Betsy had been standing for a while and had dead petrol in her.
Pulled pipe off rail and switched on ignition expecting it to just pump out the fuel but it only ran for a second and then stopped.
Why is this? Is there a better way to do this?

The ECU will only activate the fuel pump for a few seconds without the engine running. If the fuel in the tank will start the car you can remove the fuel return hose under the bonnet from the pipe back to the tank, then start the engine and it will run and pump the returned fuel into a can. Alternatively you could remove the fuel pump relay and connect a wire across where the contact pins plug into the fusebox, then switch on the ignition and the fuel pump will no longer stop without the engine running so you can pump it out as you had originally planned.
