Hey up ,
I have a FR TDI, great car, really love driving it, but it let down by the little things, one being the fact that the rubber lanyard attaching the filler cap is too short to enable the cap to be clipped to the filler door when at the pump!
This has bugged me for a while, in fact ever since i have had my car!
So today after a wash, i did something about it.
I removed the old lanyard and replaced it with a length of Rubber O ring i had in the garage.
The OEM lanyard is held on the cap by 2 tiny pins, which push out very easily, don't push them all the way out! The picture below (phone!) shows the position of the 2 pins at the cap end, the other end of the lanyard is a tight fit over a pin, but being rubber it will stretch and you can remove the lanyard.
Then i glued the new longer rubber lanyard to the cap end and pushed the pins back in, so that end is tight, and doubled it to form a ring to go over the pin on the door, and then pushed a sleeve of some piping i had in the garage to hold it all together.
I will get the real camera out and attempt to take better pics.
But now i have a filler cap that can be properly secured on the door, without any fear of it falling off and stratching the paintwork.
Cheers
Dave
