just had to replace my fuel cap and now with the new one on when i press the button inside the car to release the cap it wont pop open. took the whole unit off again and had a mate press the button while i checked the pin. pin seems to go in and out freely when the button is pressed so obv in working order. its as if when the pin goes in there is not sort of spring to push the cap out. have i missed something when putting the unit back in. did do a search but couldnt find any answer on the spring issue.

may be the solonoid bust mate, in the boot behind the cap is the solonoid, youll hear the motor whining but try replacing this.

i have read it mate, maybe im misunderstanding what the soloniod does. is it the soloniod that will push the cap outwards when the button is pressed. or is the solonoid what moves the pin in and out

so then my solonoid is ok because the pin which holds the clip does release its just the cap dont pop out. i might try installing a spring on the hinge and see if that makes it pop open

Try banging it with your hand a few times to crack the frozen latch (you have to press the button again after). On my Passat I also held the button pressed until I heard the latch noise, usually 2-3 seconds was enough - not sure if that's a good idea but it worked for me

there is a brass coloured spring which pushes the flap open when the solinoid pulls back the pin. i thought that my solinoid had gone so bought a new one and fitted it and it still didn't work so i swaped the petrol flap opening button for the button which switches of the interior alarm sensors and it worked so it was the switch. I now have a spare solinoid if anyone is interested !
