cheers for a great reply, i take it you cant get the strut out by removing the pinch bolt and compressing the spring in place to lift the strut up and out of its lower mount??

I had the same in mind. I tried to compress the spring in place, but it seemed to be quite hopeless. It's quite an easy job (about 1 hour per side) if you just take the axles off. Just remember to replace the old bolts with new ones, or you might end up with an unwelcome surprise on the motorway
