Ok I know I know, definitely not an unbiased audience, but here goes.

I have searched BTW, but haven't found answers.

Basically have have about £15k to spend on a new car. It has to be safe and reliable (as she who must be obeyed is pregnant), it has to be diesel and have fairly good fuel economy for work... But it has to be comfortable and fast...

That leaves me with the Leon FR 184 and the Golf GTD MK7

So what I'm wanting to know is... What's the difference?

I understand they use the same chassis, engine and transmission so they should be similar... But does the golf have any extra mod cons to justify the extra money?

What about the ICE/Infotainment - how do they compare to one-another?

Suspension? Breaks? All that kind of stuff really...

My brother in law has just bought a GTD and, although I've only sat in the back once, I loved it... It just felt like quality.

I guess I just want to know what the main differences are between them to help me in making a more informed decision.

Thanks guys!!! :)

Don't discount the Octavia vRS 2.0 TDI either. I've recently driven one and it's a well balanced car, so long as you can look past the Skoda badge.

Thanks for the reply :)

Yeah, sorry, there were 3 cars I was looking at, Seat, VW and Skoda.

I really like the Octavia, but the missus doesn't like the look of it or the size.

Cheers though matey :)

I loved the 2.0 TSI VRS as it was a good all rounder, but like you misses mine didnt like how bland it looked.

Its the interior which is different, both cars underneath are the same. I would say the Seat is far better equipped from the get go but the golfs build quality should be better.

And because I am biased Id get the Leon, its nicer looking, cheaper, way more fun and more kit as standard.

seconded.
Golf = higher quality materials
Leon = more kit, more fun and better-looking
Probably better handling, bigger brakes too...

I looked at the Audi A3 with 184 tdi and Golf gtd before going for the Leon 184. I felt both the A3 and Gtd were slightly better quality but worse value and looking a little dull. Leon is fresher to look at, more for your money and drives well. Its not perfect but as an overall package its better than I expected and im glad I went for it.

Best advice is try each one you are considering. Then weigh it up.

Consider the A4 1.8 TFSI Quattro, speedy thing off the line and great build quality.

I've had the leon FR and currently own MK7 gtd. The vw does have a slightly better build quality. I like the look of the Golf rather than the Leon, although i had a 3 door and the 5 door leons do look better. Engine wise nothing in it. Comfort probably the leon! Leon cheaper to buy.

Thanks a lot guys! That's a cracking help.

Is there any "pack" I should definitely be getting or avoiding (tech pack, winter pack etc...)

Cheers!!

I have a Octy as a company car and my Mrs don't like it either. She says it looks like a "Taxi" and I agree with her but it's not a bad drive. Although I do miss driving my fr daily

Hi Mate.

I really like the look of the GTD, the wheels look especially good. I am fortunate to drive a lot of different cars for work and have driven both recently. There wasn’t a lot in it driving wise. Neither rattled or made any unexpected noises (unlike the Avensis I had last week). I drove them both a couple of hundred miles too and from Winchester on country roads.

Gear change felt the same, seats a little harder in Golf – not a fan of the electronic handbrake but get used to it pretty quickly. Handling no difference that I could tell neither had DCC fitted.

Quality wise – well I think the Golf just has the edge, the overall finish is just that little bit better IMO, better damping on switches and glove box etc, but VAG aren’t daft and they know it has to be to justify the price differences.

GTD had Xenons, Leon had LEDs, personally I prefer the DRL on the LEON but the Xenons worked better than the LEDs.

The GTD also comes with ACC as standard over the LEON I believe. I think the spec is pretty similar otherwise. Both Sat Nav, the 2015 on GTD also comes with Winter Pack as standard, extra on the LEON. GTD Infotainment and NAV were a little better too.

Looks wise, I think (today) I actually preferred the GTD to be honest, especially in Carbon Grey.

Drive both and compare prices.

Rob

PS my GF doesn’t like the VRS either – her words were ‘Umm its okay I suppose, bit big’
