Ive recently had my heart set on a mk2 leon with the aero kit, so just before i decided to pull the money out to buy one i got hold of my mates for a week to see what it was like.

I love the exteroir look of the car!! think its a great car to drive too, absolutely loved throwing it into the corners but the 170bhp engine i feel doesnt do the car justice, there seemed to be a lack of power..
would a re-mapped diesel be a better car to have or the K1? which is faster? what are the fuel economy difference's?
Also when i had the car a DPf(i think) light kept comin on so i had to go through a hassle to get it off!! is that going to be a regular occurance with a diesel?

Appreciate any replies!

you are the first person who I have heard say the engine lacks power and doesnt do the cr justice.....

As for the FR170 or the K1, the performance are worlds apart but so is the economy, by about 20mpg to the gallon.

If you are already thinking the diesel lacks power I would plump for a Cupra or K1 (economy issues aside) as with any car the newness and initial wow of power soon wears off and to be feeling that before having the car is a non starter.

Personally I love my FR170 but if I didn't cover the miles I do I would have the K1 on the drive.

That is exactly what i would have said, word for word ha

I suspect your impression of the FR170 might have been spoilt by the DPF issues..? If you live in a city and/or have a short commute, I would plump for the petrol (or the new CR diesel with allegedly better DPF). It's odd that you thought the FR170 lacked power, but if it wasn't a bad sample then I think a Cupra is probably the only option.

DPF issues seem to be quite common with the FR170, but they tend to occur more often after a lot of short city journeys. A good blast on the motorway (especially in lower than 6th, to keep the revs high) will sort out the initial DPF warning light, from what I've read. It's only if the regen doesn't work that you get the more serious warning that requires intervention by a garage/dealer.

I'm very happy with the power of my FR TFSI - to be honest, I find it scarily fast sometimes - but I must admit I've never had a sporty car before, so I've nothing to compare it with. But it also loves a drink - I'm getting 32-34mpg average taking it easy.

Depends on what youve been driving before you drove the FR170. My fiances dad was driving mine about the other weekend and whilst he didnt comment, he was full throttle allot, but the normally drives a BMW 330d.

If ive been driving my fiances corsa 1.2 petrol, i really notice the power when i get back to mine.

I have logged the car over Vag-com doing high speed logging of the speed. Have measured a peak of 0.6G of peak acceleration with full throttle in 2nd gear (warm dry road and tyres) which is 13MPH/per sec of peak acceleration which really pushes you back into the seat!

That sort of acceleration is similar to a 737's average (not peak, 0-160mph) acceleration on a short runway so you can say a FR170 feels like a plane taking off!

You did take the handbrake off didn't you?

If it was indeed a 170 FR and it didn't go very well, I would say it has a fault.

You sure it was an FR?

lol yep im pretty sure that i did, yup definateky an fr, my cousin has the 140 ref sport and ive had an astra 1.9 cdti (150) and i could feel the diffrence, it jus wasnt as much as id expected.
The car was runnin fine, before i had got it it had just been or a 12,000mile service, its a 58 plate car so its pretty new and everything will have been runnin relatively well.

you are the first person who I have heard say the engine lacks power and doesnt do the cr justice.....

pulling up next to mr. S3 and givin him a decent run for his money isnt happenin in a 170, which is what i want to be doin in such a sexy car like the leon..
i used to drive a 230bhp impreza and an A3 s-line 170 stook to me happily around the city roads - the leon jus didnt feel like it was capable of doin that, the power seemed to fizzle out...
what will a re-map do? what kind of torque and bhp would i be lookin at? because going off what you guys are sayin im ready to go get the K1 but feeding that is going to hit my bank balance hard! a little too hard i think!
what kind of consumption figures do the K1 come out with? what performance figures cn u expext from a re-mapped K1 bhp and torque wise??

One other thing which i forgot to mention was the tyre squeal. now the leon i had came with pirelli on the back and 2 budgets on the front. is this the reason for the constant tyre squeal i was experiencing because that is something i cant take, i liek to throw cars into corners and look nice and controlled, i dont like it when it sounds like a squealin pig goin crazy???

If you used to drive a 230 horse Scooby then a stock Leon K1 will be better on fuel than that.

Sounds to me like a K1 with a remap to 300 is what's needed for you.

hmmm that sounds about right nath lad, tell me, how much is that goin to set me back to get it to 300bhp? what else am i goin to have to do? eibach coilovers will go onto it anyway as soon as i get it. upgrade brakes? new intercooler? etc..
Also at 300 bhp what is the fuel comsumption be relative to 240bhp?

@ 300bhp will i keep up with my cousins E46 M3(around 345bhp at the rear wheels if i remember correctly)??

try again

well i went form 08 cupra to 58 fr i think they are a fair bit apart first thing power the cupra was quicker no doubt but the fr is great to drive very touqe and i love the low down power you get you really feel it, i dont know what a re map would do as when its wet the traction light is always on, spins very easy ,tax is afair bit cheaper but the best part the fuel,as now petrol is as much as diesel i was getting about 20 to 25 from cupra i get anything form 40 to 50 from fr big saving if you do alot of miles plus fr tdi seems to be a lot cheaper second hand hope this helps one more thing for some reason fr seems a lot harder suspension for some reason both have 18 inch rims

whats the word on the re-map K1 against the M3 anyway? what will the outcome be? urban drivin...

Just buy a cupra as stock, get a remap done and hey presto 300BHP is on tap. No other mods needed as far as I know and the brakes can cope no probs.

There ar quite a few cupras on here running 300 or more.

A posh differential would be money well spent if you can stretch to one, to help put the power down.

Fuel consumption......................................You won't care cos you will have a smile tattood on your face.
