Model Year 21/22 Formentor 1.5 TSI Tuning

Hi all!

Found this forum, and I have been reading some time now. Time for my first post here. I recently got myself a Formentor from 2021.

Are there any options for a Formentor 1.5 TSI tuning options? I visited a local tuning shop, but they told me it was not possible, that due to "the engine encryption is not yet unlocked".

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this? My model is a 2021 model. I live in the Netherlands, so if possible in NL, I would be open to that.

Thanks!

Of course you can, it's the engine that you'll find back in all VAG brands and hence ubiquitous.

Stage 1 is about 180hp/320Nm and you best also do a transmission flash, providing you have a DQ250 7-DSG. The later is sensitive to tuning because of its' rather limited dry plate clutch. I presume there are many tousands of stage 1 1.5TSIs out there!

What's mad is I have the 1.5 with a DSG box, I had an Arona with the 1.0 and DSG as a courtesy car it was so much more fun to drive, it sounded better, seemed to pull quicker and was all round a nicer experience, overlooking the interior, the formentor is a much nicer place to be, but my next car won't be a 1.5, at least it won't be a non PHEV 1.5

Well thats the thing, I visited shops who were Advertising that they could give you XX horsepower and XX torque but when they tried they were unable to set those settings due to engine still being locked/encrypted/not unlcoled (or whatever it was :)) And before I travel across the country for the same result, I was hopin to gain some more insight on why and how.

Don't know where you live, but I had my Leon VZ done by these guys:
https://gorilla-tuning.be/
in Hasselt, Belgium.

For the Leon there was no problem, but I remember that he said when it would have been locked that he would have to charge a bit extra to "unlock"!? Implying to me that they could hack the lock on it?

BTW, they did both the motor and transmission flash for 600€, inclusive a dyno report of the result, mine in attach to give you an idea what you can expect from them.

My Dad (84yrs) has a Touran with the 1.5TSI 150 7-DSG, and while he's a "sedative" driver and never has driven anything above 140hp in his entire life before, he also deems that the 1.5TSI is a 'lame' horse!? He also refers to a kind of erratic behaviour: or he's always last at the stoplights or the tires are screaming for grip. In short, he's not a fan either.

BTW, I see that racechip.eu has a free of charge charge 30 days return policy. Their RS map on the Formentor promises 186hp/311Nm for 279€, which should be able to deliver a noticable additional punch. You could try that maybe?

Talked to a prominent chiptuner in NL, he told me that the type of motorchip in my car is DPCA and that they are not able to modify it. Timetable wise it could be weeks or years even before it is available. Guess I have to wait for it.

Hearing this, makes me have less confidence in the Race chip, unless that works differently. I read through the site but doesnt explain that part.

To my understanding, a racechip, or most probably any piggy back, doesn't alter the ECU software. It doesn't require a flash, so a lock is not a problem. You can always contact those guys directly, they reacted fast on my questions a few years back. Besides, when it doesn't work, you can ship it back.

Have to say I'm very happy with my 1.5. Previously ran a 190tdi passat and sure the passat is quicker but the 1.5 has been impressive. I think the issue with the 1.5 is tat the power is progressive- there's no turbo kick. The 1.0 by comparison is a very strong engine, feels much quicker than it should.

I've been driven in a 1.0 Q2 and it felt like a strong engine, the torque is in all the right places.
