Flat battery problems?

Just had a bit of a bad afternoon - unlocked the car,put the key in the ignition, realised I needed something from the garage - car locks itself and sets the alarm - me in garage. Haven't got a spare key so calls out the RAC. Luckily my other, more sensible half, has been a member for over 20 years so they agree to fix at the house even though we haven't got home cover. RAC man does the window thing so there's a gap for his "prod" (a long bendy bar) and trys to turn the key but the angles are all wrong and it won't budge plus the alarm keeps going off. He has another way of turning on the ignition,I won't say how unless the mods allow me to (mods, you are reading this?), and operate the windows (with prod). Anyway after much gratitude:D from me and a bit of a chat:funk: (he's been a very nice man for almost 20 years and tells me a few interesting stories) off he goes,he doesn't give me the key until he's about to go,wonder why...... I start the car and notice (impossible not to) that the power steering isn't working, go back to the house for a sulk and a ponder:think: . Check the fuses, doesn't seem to be one for power steering and try to start it again - turns over but doesn't fire - more sulking:confused: . Leave it for about 15 minutes and it starts first time and we have much lighter steering;) . Off I go to the the cash point and back at "trouble" it won't start - the batterys dead (clock resets itself). Don't really fancy bump starting it, get it going with jump leads and drive home - no power steering, indicators, dash lights (it's dark now),dim headlamps (and getting more stupid by the second) plus there's several warning lights telling me I've got no ABS,airbags etc etc. The question is does a low battery cause all this to happen. The battery is on charge (I'm trickle charging overnight) so tomorrow could be interesting. The "beast" is a 2002 130 TDi so the battery is a big 'un and should last. I've only had it a few days and only really driven it after dark and because it's so high geared the alternator's probably not being allowed to give it many amps. Does this sound plausible?,there's a voltmeter on the dash as it's an early car and it was showing under twelve volts running which indicates a duff alternator but there's so many systems on this car that at 60mph and 1600 revs the electrical power-in minus power-out must be quite low.

It should be running approx 13.5v, but no more than 14v running without load eg lights rear, window heater etc. With load approx 13.5 and engine not running should be approx 12.8v. It does sound like the voltage regulator or brushes though. I'd get it into Seat and connect up vagcom - or see if someone on SCN is nearby.

It shouldn't have locked itself. It should only lock itself if you unlock it and DO NOTHING for 30 seconds. You presumably opened the driver's door to get in, and this should have stopped it re-locking itself. I'd be tempted to get the microswitch inside the driver's door latch checked out - it seems as if the central locking system didn't notice when you opened the driver's door.

Thanks for the replies - I opened the door but didn't sit in it, then closed the door and about 30 seconds later it locked itself (RAC guy could get the button up but it still wouldn't open) and set the alarm.

Good to meet you Daniel, car finally ran out of fuel 5miles from home - couldn't stop to fill up as fuel cap was locked and there wasn't enough power in the battery to restart. Noticed that when the voltmeter got to ten volts the power steering was off and at 8 volts the dash lit up like a xmas tree and made a lot of annoying noises, even the oil light was on which was a bit worrying. My better half rescued me and just charging my battery from hers with jump leads for ten minutes put enough power in the battery to get me home with power steering and no warnings on the dash. Took the alternator off and had it tested. they (Greens in Leicester) said it was fine but the clutch in the pulley could be faulty. Apparently this is to stop the alternator charging on startup keeping "drag" to a minimum. I've put in a replacement alternator (thanks Michael, pleased with the Milltek, shame to hide it under the car) and this now works fine showing 13.5 volts running. While I was at it noticed a leak from the intercooler pipe near the headlamp so quite pleased to fix yet another fault at the same time. I'm going to replace the pulley in the "old" alternator with a normal non-clutch one - anyone thinks this will cause other problems? I've ordered a K&N panel filter to replace the OE one - £43.17 incl delivery from filterpower.co.uk (cheaper than Ebay) and am collecting some five spoke Skoda Alloys (same size & offset as standard) with as new Bridgestones at the weekend.
