I had this again this morning :(

The first time it happened, it was actually genuine... on my way home from work one of the plastic elbows on the bottom of the radiator had burst, lost all the coolant & the temperature guage went up to the red.

The radiator was replaced under warranty, and everything was fine for a good few months.

Then one morning, I started her up and after about 5 seconds of the engine running the red light & beeps happened. The coolant level had dropped just below the 'MIN' mark on the bottle. About 200ml top up was all that was needed to top it up. There were no apparent leaks, and there was a slight "hiss" when I took the cap off, so I guess the system is air tight

I check the oil, coolant & washer levels weekly (along with tyre pressures etc.) and there has been no drop in coolant level.

After several months of being 'normal', this morning when I started the car, after 5 seconds, the red light & beeps happened again. I checked the coolant level and it had dropped to 'MIN' again.

Where is the coolant going? There are no obvious leaks anywhere & the system is tight. It's fine for months, looses about 200ml over night, top it up and it's fine for a few more months

Any ideas???

Sometimes the seal on the coolant reservoir isn't great and you start to lose pressure at high temps - it could be that. Would explain why you only got a slight hiss perhaps?

I have had this before in the colder weather and was wondering if the cold would cause the coolant to contract overnight, reducing the volume, causing the level to drop below minimum and the warning light to come on, could be complete bollox of course.
