FL FR subwoofer question

Hi all been reading the forums for a while before I got my new car in December 09 and thought I'd say hello and help at the same time!!

Coming from an Audi A3 I was a bit disappointed in the lack of bass from the Leon.

This is a company car so I can't do any noticable upgrades full stop which rules out putting a decent HU in so I set to work first on upgrading the speakers to SPL dynamics SD 6.1s which a few people have recommended on here.

This improved things slightly but I can only go to 16 on the volume before it all goes horribly wrong and distortion sets in - I can't believe the HU goes to 30!!

So I thought why not put a sub in then I can ease off the bass a bit to the doors.

I had a sony xplod 8" sub & amp box combo from ages ago and thought I would fit that but it was a bit on the large side when I did a test-fit it in the boot and could get a "WTF is that??!?" from the company car police so I found an InPhase USW10 Ulra Compact jobby and this fits snugly under the drivers seat out of sight.

Problem is, I don't think the stock HU is powerful enough to run it. I'm using speaker level input, the gain is on max and I have to have the volume on the HU at 14 to get anything half decent out of it. That plus I have to have the bass from the HU on 9 (max) to get more than an odd thud out of it, which completely defeats the object of getting it in the first place (as I would also be over-bassing my door speakers).

My first question is, would a LLC make any difference or have I just wasted quite a bit of money on a naff product?

Don't know if this is the norm (my previous sub was wired to RCA pre-amp outs on a sony HU) but the speaker level inputs on this sub just consist of 2 positive wires, L and R, which I've spliced into the wires coming out of the back of the HU. I guess the sub sorts out it's own negative from the ground connection??

Also, the sub does a thud-thud-thud when I turn the ignition on and again when the stereo is turned on (if it was off previously). The remote feed I got from my nokia car kit install which is wired to the fusebox at the side of the steering wheel, don't know if it's this or the sub which is dodgy but the car kit is fine?? I got the ground connection from the bare metal that the centre console mounts to on the drivers side.

Sorry for the rant, loving the car but I also love my tunes and wanted a bit of beef. Hopefully somone can help me out here!

Thanks in anticipation :)
Mic.
