fitting new headunit under steering wheel! now for the problems!!!

i recently fitted a new head unit under my steering wheel on my 2001 ibiza as i couldnt be bothered with the task of findin somewhere else to fit it..... i had the unit wired up (after a few tedious trips to halfords and various extention cables later) and it was working fine until........it turned its self off and the interior light just came on??? ......... now it works with the ignition off but as soon as i turn the ignition on it cuts out and the interior light comes on, i dont know why this happens as all i done was remove the wires from the old head unit and put them in to the new one.
i have now found out that once the ignition is on if i press the key in ( about 2mm) then again the head unit works.... its confused the hell out of me and im trying to give up smoking and this really isnt helping me haha so any help would be muchly appreciated....

all i can really suggest is double check the wiring. maybe the ignition cable from the headunit.

how are the wires tied together? soldered and electrical taped? or more of a bodged job??

in the next few wekks i am hoping to put a single slot cd player in the glove box i have got a spare one.
cd changer are too expensive at the moment plus i hate them

I did the glovebox way on my 1.4 and that was ok but you gota make sure it sits back far enough or it will pop open when u go over a bump.

Best place imo is under the steering colum
