First off allow me to appologize as i'm sure you have all answered countless questions about air filters... Sorry....

Anyway, I have just purchased a "universal" performance air filter for my '98 1.9TDI Ibiza. I took the old filter out of the box and attached the performance filter, simple enough...

But here's the problem. When i took out the old filter and went to remove the filter box, i noticed a "cable"(?) going into the old filter box. It's not the electrical wire that goes into (what i think is) the temp sensor, (the small square(ish) box with the VW and audi badge on it that's just above, nearer to the windscreen than, the air filter box, it just attaches to the top half of the old air filter box. When i fit the performance filter i don't see where this "cable"(?) goes. The filter i have is a "mushroom" filter by Ripspeed. (Do you know which i'm talking about?)

Also, getting the bottom of the box out of the car is a bit trickey. Is it ok to leave this in and have the performance filter sitting on top of it? It's not touching it but i think you know what i mean... Also, is it worth drilling the box if it hasn't got it's lid on anyway?

Basically the main problem is the "cable"(?). It's in commers and question marked as it could also be described as a "hose" (i guess...)

Is it ok to run the car without this "cable" or "hose" connected? If so do i have to tape the end off? If it's not ok to run the car without the "cable" connected, where on earth does this attach to my new filter?

Sorry for the long post guys but i wanted to be thorough.

P.S. the '98 1.9TDI Toledo uses the exact same air filter box, ect... so if you know about that then it will be relevant to my Ibiza.

If you think you can help but don't know what i'm on about please post and i'll try and clear it up...

Cheers.

Shaun.

There are quite few hoses running out and into the airbox. the one right at the top which is a black rubber hose apx 15mm in diameter is the breather pipe. you can usually get tiny little breather pipe filters which go on the end, but you can leave it open if you want. It will have slight smoke coming out if it because I think those are oil vapours or something.

If its the little clear plastic hose half way down the airbox (about 4mm diameter) then that's the vacuum tube that helps regulate whether your airbox is being supplied hot or cold air, but because when running an Induction kit you disconnect the hot air supply, the vacuum tube will be useless. Same goes for the bottom half of the airbox if the top half isn't connected.

BTW complete removal of the airbox is easy (putting it back in is a pain tho), just disconnect all the hoses, undo the two jubilee clips and take off the two rubber band things and thats that. 3 mins tops.

Czechboy, thanks for the response. I think it's the vacuum tube so it should be ok to leave it off...
Got the box off. Someone had secured it with hidden tie wraps...

Thanks again.
