Fault Code P0404 - EGR Valve

:help: Hi folks,

Just wondering if some kind soul may be able to help me out. My 1.2 has registered fault P0404 and the engine warning light came on. The fault code says P0404, EGR Control, Circuit Range / Performance. I checked the connections to the valve and cleared the fault, it has not returned yet.

The fault occured the other day, I had a strange clicking on startup and some hesitation under low engine load conditions. The warning light did not come on initially but only after I deliberately drove it under low load at 50mph in 5th and made it hesiatate.

From reading up on EGR valves it seems that it is only operational during these load load conditions so this fits nicely. The hesitation is still there so I am assuming that I will get the fault code again shortly.

I'm going to check the wiring more thorougly as I now have a copy of the wiring diagram. There are three wires from the ECU, one power and one earth point.

Assuming that this doesn't throw up a concern, does anyone have experience of this issue and a recommended fix? Any more detail on P0404 would be appreciated as I don't want to replace the valve only to find that the ECU is at fault.

Thanks very much.

Andy

Yeah? It's definitely something as the warning light comes on if I provoke it. I think a TDi may react differently anyway.

I'm wondering whether the K&N replacement element filter has caused it. It seemed to happen shortly after fitting this. It may have affected the airflow enough to confuse the ECU??

If I drive the car hard then it's no problem at all. To be honest, the performance gain from fitting a K&N is negligable. Think I'll get a bigger engine next time!! No new car until June next year though, a Civic 2.2CDTi for sure!

Ok mate, ta.

Once I've checked all the wiring and put a std air filter in I'll see how I get on. Don't want to have the valve replaced yet as it's running pretty much ok.
