Fan noise?

I tried searching and only came up with 2 threads which didn't have an answer as they were from after switching the car off.

I have noticed after starting my car that there is an electric fan that runs for approx 30 to 60 seconds and then switches off (and the car seems to then idle better) . However it is a bit noisier than I would expect.
What would this fan be?

Could it be the assumably rather expensive a/c unit? or are there other fans which start with the engine and then go off (I assume it does come on at other times too but with the engine noise and being inside the car I cant hear it)

Its a 2001 pre-facelift Leon Cupra. Cheers for that thread, looks as though its a very common problem *sigh*

Think I should be able to make one of those Pulse Width Modulators for a fiver, less if they have the 555 timers in work :)

deffo your slow fan resistor is F'd. My LCR had the same problem and I got the entire set of rads changed under warranty, if your car still has warranty get the stealers to change it out.
