Extended Warranty Advice

My 66 plate FR 2.0 TDI is 3 years old at the end of the month and I'm considering extending the warranty. It's done 30000 trouble free miles but I'm wondering what others have done? Do I get the comprehensive cover or named components and what about the excess? I'll be looking to change in around 12-18 months time so I don't know if that's a consideration. Thanks.

The extended warranty is run by mondial warranty and not the same as the manufacturer one, however is still a decent warranty. They will of course have exclusions which a lot of 3rd party warranties aswell as manufacturers include.

I used to be a warranty manager at vw/skoda/audi dealers

From memory the exclusions of warranty includes

Wear and tear items
Seals
Water ingress
Wiring
Damaged/broken items

If it was me i would always go for the comprehensive cover over the named.

If you speak to the dealer they will have some leaflets regarding the warranty policies explaining what it covers and not in both.

Warranty is like any insurance policy; it’s quite costly for year 4 and/or year 5 policy for full cover c.£1k pa.

Another option is to put away £85 per month, and just dip into this if you need any repairs. If not, deposit towards new car.

Expensive items are engine and gearbox - despite 3 year UK warranty, consumer rights act is for up to 6 years - if the car has a full service history to manufacturers specification, you would be well within your rights to get an independent inspection and claim through the small claims court if anything major failed that wasn’t considered wear and tear.

I took out the full component cover Seat warranty when my 65 plate 1.4 ecotsi reached 3 years old. Price was £150 with £100 excess and 15,000 annual mileage limit. My car had 37,000 miles at that point.

I’ve made one claim this year for a rear shock absorber. No quibbles and when I told the Seat dealer I had their warranty they just pulled up the policy using the registration. It was surprisingly painless.

I will likely renew for the 5th year assuming price doesn’t go up too much.

Hope this is helpful.

Reason being is as its a vag approved warranty, dealers have a system to check and also put claims down for approval prior to repairs being done.

Where as other 3rd party warranties are a bit more of a pain as you have to ring the company up to check "IF" they actually have a warranty and what is covered etc.

I have the Seat extended warranty. Full cover with no excess, £175 per year and my Leon is a 2013 1.4tsi. This is my 3rd year.

I’ve claimed for Turbo actuator, oil leak and full hand brake lever unit. All sorted with no issues so I’d recommend it.

They're quoting £295 with the same conditions i.e 10000 miles and £100 excess. Seems a little excessive given what you paid, unless the 2.0 TDI isn't as reliable.

One other thing to point out is claims get complied using the same dealer systems as the standard manufacturers. So theres less delays. Where as say for example warranty wise or AA warranty dealers have to mess about phoning the company to see if it is covered and argueing about how much the claim is etc.

I took out the extended warranty on my 184FR back in May. Strange thing was when I was able to get a quote, within the last month of it running out, I was getting a quote of £700+ for the full cover with £0 excess. I checked regularly until nearer the renewal date, and as it got within the last week, it changed to £366! Very little difference if I added excess or changed it to named components, so went for the full option and £0 excess. This was with the car having approx 32,000 miles on it and doing approx 14,000 miles a year.

My parents took the extended warranty on their golf. They have recently had an issue with the aircon and it would meant a c£2k bill which has now been covered, for modern cars the insurance makes sense as there is so much that can go wrong and its expensive to fix when it does.

I'll wait until a couple of days before and check again, thanks.

Has anyone had much experience with taking out non manufacturer extended warranty i.e. warranty direct on a used car?
Im looking into buying a cupra (2016/17 plate) but going through Seat its going to cost nearly £800 p.year, whereas warranty direct im looking at £1K for 3 years.

Third party warranties are notorious for getting out of any repairs.

Have a couple of friends which work in independent garages that are "approved warranty" workshops and I hear constant stories on how they just get out of everything they can.

Manufacturer extended warranty is the only option I would consider.

Yep as i mentioned above i have dealt with a lot of 3rd party ones and all are just as bad! Delays in authorising not wanting to authorise repairs etc etc and it just delays customers
