Evening all.

Having had a look under the car this afternoon, it would seem that the outer skin of the backbox is severely corroded to the point where most of the underside is missing and there are two rusty flaps hanging from the two sides! Sods law is that the MOT is coming up very soon, any idea if this will be a failure and require replacement?

Cheers

I'm in the same boat as you, car is a late 2002 Polo 1.4 16V with 92.5K miles, at last MOT I was issued with an advisory about that, for this next MOT I intend to either fit a wire wrap round the box or use a length of worm drive banding that I've bought. When this outer skin splitting free really gets bad it will cause the examiner problems due to the fact that it could become dangerous, so either band it up or cut it free.

Yeah that makes sense. Mine's an 55 Tdi with similar mileage. Sounds like its time to do some tidying up with the tin snips! The inner skin seems intact for now so hopefully it'll get through the MOT. Could do without having to replace the backbox given that I'm shelling out for a new pair of front tyres after the last pair only managed 12k :'(

My exhaust is the same as yours. The outer skin has rusted away at the bottom and there is a big hole with the edges curled back like onion skins. Despite this it has passed two MOTs as the inner skin is not leaking. I did get an advisory at the last MOT, though, so I will have to get it replaced soon.

Does anybody know what sort of price a standard exhaust for an FR TDi is?
