225/40/R18 speed rating is up to you but Y is what mine came with from the dealers.
Factory fit seems to be Pirelle PZero Rossos which I felt were a tad noisy and gave a bit of tramlining after a few mm wear so I banged on some Continental sportcontact3's and they are a delight.

Can you fit 16's? Probably but your speedo, trip computer etc will be all to **** unless you reprogram it....better off just getting a set of winter rubber and getting your local fitters to swap them in and out at the appropriate times for a few quid.

I personally dont think the 18's have much impact on MPG...at least not as much as my heavy right foot does.

Boot space is fine. I can fit 4 large suitcases and sundry crap in mine...enough for 3 people (two of which are female) and 2 dogs to go on holiday for 10 days, or alternatively about 1.5 cubic meters of chopped wood for my wood burner. (I highly recommend getting the A4 B7 Boot liner for about £35...it fits perfectly, makes cleaning the boot a doddle and saves your boot carpet no end) :)

Whether 16" will fit or not depends on the brakes size. If you have the 170 TDI or the TSI they will not fit as the brakes are too big.
Check here for what size will fit, just enter your car details and it will tell you for sure.

The 16 inch wheels will fit the exeo as long as it is not a 170.
I have an Exeo Sport and the spare is a 16 inch steel with the same size tyres as the wifes' Altea.

I fitted a pair of steel 16's with winter tyres in December and made no difference to MPG or speedo (sat nav showed same speed with 18's & 16's at 60mph as on car speedo)

Hope that helps a bit

just to state the obvious, if 16`s are fitted, the tyre walls will be taller and will/should make the same rolling radias as the 18`s.

I have the 170 se lux but the spare is 16 inch. Can anyone check if theirs is the same as I may have the wrong size spare.

My SELUX 170 has a 17 inch steel spare.

You need to fit yours and see. The problem will be with the frond brakes so you can move your tyres round so that the spare goes on the rear and you're fine.
