ESP/Traction control works but does not switch off

Hi all,

Hoping to pick your brains.

I just got myself a 2004 mk1 LCR. I'm happy with the car it's in great condition inside and out.

Only issue that's bugging me is the ESP / Traction control. The light illuminates on the instrument cluster when I turn the car on and then goes off. Traction control works perfectly fine when driving, light flickers on dash when car loses traction. But when I press the ESP button nothing happens, ie traction control remains on and doesn't turn off.

Of course my wife is pleased with this situation as she thinks it means we will save a lot on tires, but from time to time when I'm up against someone at the lights I would like to switch it off for launching without brakes cutting out the fun.

Any ideas what it could be?

Could just be an simple as a dodgy button? Pop it out and check all the wiring is in place, button not sticking etc.... Mine sticks like hell, doesn't feel like its being pressed but seems to work for the moment. Mines a LC not LCR though so not sure button is even the same!
