ESP Light Comes on (but sometimes disappears too)

First up, I have read the thread on the 'broken load signal cable from alternator', but I'm a little worried that my problem is not the same.....

As in the fault described in that thread, my traction control / ESP light sometimes comes on after 10 minutes. However, it doesn't come on for every journey, and when it comes on, sometimes it goes away again.

e.g. I drove down to France last week, and it didn't come on once on the way down to Paris. On the way back, it came back on, and then disappeared after an hour or so.

Before I destroy my jacking points / drop the car on my head / thread all the undertray screws etc., is this still likely to be the same problem, as in the thread it uses the phrase 'won't go off until you turn the engine off' which clearly doesn't apply to me?

If I were you I'd avoid sticking any part of your body under a car when its only supported by a wheel changing jack, can you not get it up onto some wood blocks/kerb/etc? Your car might just have a breaking sense wire as opposed to a broken one, so the alternator is mainly still happy about life!

I'm not that reckless! I've got a set of 2 ton axle stands, but I have a track record of 'forgetting' to do things whilst working on the car, so the less time I spend with a tool in my hand, the better things are for everyone.

I'll probably just drop it in to my friendly mechanic along with a printout of the load sensor thread.

I had exactly the same symptoms to start with, not always coming on but after a while it occured after 10 mins every time.

I agree with RUM4MO that the wire is deteriorating and will soon give up the ghost.

Give the wires a gentle tug or get a multimeter on the wires to ensure continuity, but I reckon your issue is still load signal related.

I am sure if you had the error codes checked this would be confirmed.

This is the most simple of fixes, unlike the £800 Seat quoted for a replacement ABS control unit!

Good luck :)
