hi could anybody help me i was goin to work today and half way there the car started to make a wierd knocking noise when accelerating and i funny noise on tick over so any help or suggestions are welcome thanks
If you drive a TDI with the 150 bhp engine then I suspect that you may have a camshaft/follower issue which is common to that particular engine. Get it checked right away before you drive any further and you may just get away with a camshaft, a set of tappets, fresh oil etc. and labour with a bill somewhere in the region of £600.
Viking that bill is likely to be nearer £800 as when you change the cam and tappets there are hex/cheeses bolts that need renewing and theses are in the region of £100 alone.
Cam comes in at £350
Tappets are £17 each
Labour approaching £150
Oil and filter £50
All brought on by not using 505.01 oil, if its cam tappet failure. When its got to the point its tapping then there is usually a mifire poor running issue

i am running 505.01 oil but my car as now got 186000 miles as i use it to travel to country 5 days a week but never had a problem till now other than the odd sencor here an there it does sound like a misfire when tickin over but a load knocking/ticking sound when revved does this sound like the tappits
Glynn, I wasn't including labour in that figure. That was just parts that a mate of mine paid.
The issue isn't non 505.01 oil really, it's a batch of soft cams that were produced back then, and tappets that weren't heat treated correctly I believe.
