Not too far away
Check that the rubber strip at the back of the engine bay is in place all the way across the width of the car...

On the leon sometimes a gap can appear at one end and you get a lot engine smell through into the cabin.

Worth a look anyhow!

Mine does exactly the same. It smells a bit like burning, but its not a clutch smell. It will probably be the air-con system. Most engines have a heater hose which comes from the engine to heat the cabin. My guess is its that you can smell :D Its really annoying though. Mine seems to happen when driving from work (straight onto dual carriageway at 70mph)

I have this smell. Cant point a finger at what it is though! Does it when not driving hard sometimes.

Change the pollen/cabin filter in the aircon system.

get an activated carbon one (eurocarparts do them) for best performance.

The OEM activated carbon filters go off after a while.

I replace mine every year at the service for the price that they are.

Fuel Smells

...*****UPDATE***** I have recently found the source of my particular problem. 2 Garages couldn't work it out....(one of which was a SEAT dealership...Oh HELL!!!) anyway, took it to a regular garage who diagnosed the fault within minutes. The problem was a clip that secures the seal between the Exhaust and the Turbo...It had ruptured and therfore everytime i started the engine it naturally gave out a puff of the black stuff....Hey presto Fuel smells. Anyway...£14 for the part and £60 to fit if it wasn't under warranty, so no cost to me at all (apart from the air con "Bomb" that SEAT advised.....SEAT SOUTHAMPTON...."Muppets") all is now fine and power is back up to normal "WTF levels....;-) Oh by the way, in case anyone wants to check this out for themselves the area in questions is accessed at the back middle just in front of the wind screen behind a silver cover. Must remove Engine rocker cover first to see it.
